    Upon bootup I get : Select Op Sys
    1. XP Home
    2. XP setup

    Then I have to act pretty sprightly to make choice 1.

    Have gone into BIOS to select boot off HD

    Still continues.

    What does this mean-> "Then I have to act pretty sprightly to make choice 1 "

    Does 1 work when selected?
    What's the history behind the issue? This boot up screen generally doesn't happen over night OR by itself...

    If I'm not quick enough it will boot into XP setup.

    The history is http://www.windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?t=54200 which resulted in me doing a reinstall of XP

    Hi Roy,

    Did you do a repair of XP or a complete re install?

    And if it was a clean re install, did you divide the C drive into multiple partitions?

    Sounds like you're getting a dual boot menu or recovery options.

    For the timing issue, try the following:

    Right My Computer
    Properties
    Advanced Tab

    Under Startup and Recovery
    Settings bar

    Under System Startup
    Adjust the times upward - the default should be 30 seconds.

    Click the Edit bar and copy and paste that into your post.

    Regards - Charles

    [Boot Loader]
    Timeout=5
    Default=C:\$WIN_NT$.~BT\BOOTSECT.DAT
    [Operating Systems]
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS= "Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition" /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn
    C:\$WIN_NT$.~BT\BOOTSECT.DAT= "Microsoft Windows XP Setup "

    Charles,

    That above is the current readout.
    I have not made any alterations to that readout though to my ignorance of the matter it would appear to me that the last line maybe ought not be there.

    BUT...believe me...I WON'T touch a thing until I get feedback.

    Thanks
    Roy

    Have just gone back to ....Default Operating System in System startup and noticed that both of those 2 options are available in the drop down selection

    Hi Roy,

    I don't know what put it there.

    You can handle this in one of two ways, this is doing no harm - so you can leave it there if you would prefer that.

    Or do the following:

    Copy this thing, this thing is the boot.ini file, to Notepad.

    Get rid of these two lines:

    Default=C:\$WIN_NT$.~BT\BOOTSECT.DAT
    C:\$WIN_NT$.~BT\BOOTSECT.DAT= "Microsoft Windows XP Setup "

    I want to make sure that you have an XP OS disc that you would use if something went wrong, I think you do. The procedure would be to boot into the Recovery Console to recreate the boot.ini file.

    FWIW, my boot.ini. I don't have those lines, but its different form yours because I dual boot.

    [boot loader]
    timeout=30
    default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS
    [operating systems]
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS= "XP on D" /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn

    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS= "Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition" /fastdetect=OptIn /NoExecute=OptIn

    The highlighted line is the D drive/partition OS, if I took out the one for D, thats what yours should look like.

    I know I'm giving a mixed message, but you must be certain that you can recover from bad advice or bad execution.

    Don't do anything for awhile and let others look at this.

    Regards - Charles

    Thanks Charles..that seems pretty logical then again these PC's are pretty ornrey critters going by all the posts just on this BB alone.

    Like I mentioned I had just gone back to ....Default Operating System in System startup and noticed that both of those 2 options are available in the drop down selection.

    In the first instance possibly it would be worth a shot of setting it here on the "Micro soft Windows XP Home Edition" /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn and see how that boots up.

    Yes I do have an XP Home OEM disk though trust I don't have to use it for some time yet.

    Setting it as the default boot, yes, that should work and also reset the timeout to 30 seconds, so that if this shows up again, you have plenty of time to react.

    OK n THANKS...we won on that one and I have reduced the "show time" to 2 seconds.

    However, as you suggested, the removal of script as outlined by you is apparently the "correct" way to deal with this "annoyance" as I believe I shouldn't even have such an option on bootup.

    Just another thing before I finish.
    Perhaps I am becoming a bit too instantaneous but is there a way to manage the time factor in relation to the BLACK screen following bootup until Welcome/Windows?
