I have been exaspearted by having my homepage hijacked, with associated pop-ups etc. I followed the advice given by Pete C regarding use of Smitfraudfix and Hijack This. It appears to have worked. Here are the reports.

Please go to Add/Remove, and if found, uninstall the following:
Zango\180Solutions
WildTangent <<<---WildTangent is typically bundled with AOL's AIM, and more times than not is not required.

Run Hijackthis and look over the following entries I have listed, check the boxes next to them and press the "Fix Checked" button with HijackThis. When you are doing this, make sure you have No IE windows, or other browsers open, including this one. Reboot if I have specified below, and post a fresh HijackThis log.

Reboot, into safe mode, this way:
Turn on the computer
Immediately begin tapping the <F8> key.
Use the arrow keys to highlight Safe Mode and press the <Enter> key.

Also, enable the 'Show Hidden Folders' option, like this:
Click Start.
Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm.
Click OK.

And search for, then delete, if found, (some may not be present after previous steps) the following files/folders:
C:\Program Files\Zango Programs<<<<---folder
C:\Program Files\WildTangent<<<<---folder
C:\WINDOWS\system32\hp100.tmp <<<--file

To exit Safe Mode, click the Start button, click Turn Off Computer, click Restart.

The links and the apps are some of the most highly regarded apps in the field of security/protection & detection. Run AdAware & Spybot at least once a week, depending on your surfing habits.

With AdAware and Spybot: DL, check for updates, then scan, repair/remove/quarantine anything found. Reboot before next scan with whichever app is next.

With Spyware Blaster, just DL, check for updates, enable protection, and your done!

To avoid known malware infested sites from loading in IE install IESPY ADS.
And MVPS Hosts File will provide another layer of protection.

And to prevent unknown applications from being installed on your machine inistall WinPatrol v9.8.1.0.

Thanks for your guidance. I have Norton installed and it updates and autochecks once a week, but, although it recognised the initial problem, it didn't cure it and it failed to pick up any of the residual stuff we've just dealt with. Also, the system has felt like turning a battleship in a canal since it's been on. Is it worth keeping if I do the other stuff you suggest?

 

Is the Norton product one of the all inclusive av\firewall\anti-spyware type of suites? If so, and you have not purchased it yet or you can get any refund, I would suggest you either not purchase it or get a refund.

Most all of these types of all-in-one packages are sub par as they do not cover all categories well, usually just working ok.

You're better off having stand alone applications with the exception of perhaps something like an av\firewall combo.

Also remember, unless the Norton app is the one which includes malware detection, your standard av apps will not be able to fully detect and remove most malwares as they behave differently.
