    Someone must have some ideas???

I am convinced that there must be something in the registry causing the problem. It's not the firewall because my laptop on the same network works fine.

If all else fails I will pay for this PCRescue prog and hope they have the answer.

Bob, I'm really out of ideas on this.

Pcpitstop has a good reputation, so from that standpoint, and if you don't mind spending the money, I would try it.

I thought I ought to come back and let you know that the problem is - finally - solved.

The trouble is that I don't know for sure what cured it.

After taking all the advice on her I bought PCRescue but that gave me a clean bill of health. I did do some other stuff in various settings and, having spotted "norton" somewhere during a scan, I scoured the computer for any reference to "Norton" and "Symantech" and deleted them. I Thought I had alredy done this once but they are very tenacious. I also searched the registry and cleaned that too.

Thanks to all of you for your advice.

    Bob
