Keyboard Problems: Not detected, or stops responding

I recently started having some keyboard problems:

When I plug in my keyboard, sometimes the motherboard isn't registering that the keyboard is plugged in. Other times, I will be in the middle of surfing on the internet and the keyboard will stop working completely. I have to sit and mess with my keyboard for 30 min - an hour to get it to work again usually. Sometimes, when recognizing the keyboard, it will say that windows does not recognize this device. I have installed the drivers that came with the keyboard and have tried multiple keyboards yet the same thing always happens. Thanks a bunch for the help

All USB, PS/2 or both?

 

PS/2 doesn't work at all so I use USB but its the one that is having the problems.

with PS2 the computer doesn't recognize that anything is put in the port all the time. with USB it only occurs 3/4 of the time

 

Not recognizing PS/2 keyboards is probably (I hope) a setting in the BIOS/CMOS. Otherwise, the BIOS is having trouble communicating with any keyboard.

I would go to the BIOS settings at startup and load (Setup) Defaults or wording like that. Have a PS/2 keyboard on hand.

After that I would look at the motherboard manufacturer's website for FAQs regarding your motherboard model or keyboards in general.

After that I would look at the information for upgrades to the BIOS and see if any relate to the keyboard (note: don't take BIOS upgrades lightly).

How does "mess with keyboard" fix the problem?

If you can supply info about your motherboard (make and model number), we may be able to find some specific information.

I doubt it is a physical problem with the motherboard, you should be able to run both USB or PS/2 as a backup for the other.

As for your question

If I mess with the plug in to the USB port for a while (plugging/unplugging and moving it around) it will start working after a while

 

thank you very much Matt, I believe that fixed my problems for now. Both the mouse and keyboard where disabled in the BIOS settings. I enabled them both and unplugged/replugged them in a couple times to see if they would work right away which to my amazement, they did. Thanks again for the help and thanks for this wonderful board for the help with my annoying problem!
