I use Paint Shop Pro to edit my digital photos. At some point I must have designated that all JPEG files be opened with PSP (when I first look at the SD disk from my camera with Explore, the files are type- "PSP9 image "). When I double click on a file, a new PSP window opens (even if it's already open), but then a windows error message box opens and tells me

"Windows cannnot find the file <path to the file I clicked>. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. To search .... "

However if I right click on the file and choose, Open with PSP, it opens just fine. Why doesn't the double click work? Appreciate any help.

The file association is broken. Either it is pointing at the wrong program file or is missing a required switch. Easiest fix is probably this:
    1. Right click on the file, and instead of selecting PSP, select "Choose Program ".
    2. In the next dialogue box that opens, select "Always use this program to open these files" and then select PSP from the list.
The system should then work the way you want from then on.

Thanks Reggie, but double click still doesn't work. It's baffling.

check in the program you want to use in the options tab if there is a page that says associate files with this program,
and if you find it, select or unselect jpg

sunko75--I understand this happens only when you already have somehow already opened a PSP window. Was that by clicking on a .jpg image? What happens when you click PSP File|Open and try to open the new image that way?
Perhaps PSP needs to be uninstalled and reinstalled.

Another thing to try is to right click on one of the image files with which you are having problems, then Properties. What is indicated in the "Type of File" line? What is indicated in the "Open With" line? That will allow you see if your present assumptions about type of file and association are valid.

    Welshjim,
Thanks for your help. A little more background:
My hard drive crashed a month ago and I now have a new machine. I reinstalled Paint Shop Pro 9. Before the crash, I would look at my photos in Explore (thumbnails) and double click and they would open in PSP9. I could then double click on another file (from Explore) and the new photo would open in the PSP9 window that was already open. I primarily used explore to open photos because the "Open" dialog box in psp9 is small and you can only view a few photos at a time and when you want to open another photo, it defaults back to the first pic in the list and you have to scroll all the way down..... it's a pain, so double clicking from explore is much faster, only now the double click gives the error message I indicate in my first post. When I right click properties, the files are jpeg image and "open with" PSP9. Don't know what else to try.
