When I boot up, I get the following message:

"Invalid Backweb application id "137903 ".

I have absolutely no idea what it is, what it means, what to do about it, who to contact, etc. Can anyone help?

There are lots of other references.
    A quote from one

"BackWeb is a generic downloading tool used by various software companies that incorporate it to download data such as product updates. BackWeb is capable of collecting information from your PC and delivering it to the collection site. Whenever you connect to the Internet, BackWeb also connects to retrieve advertisements, which are then displayed on your browser as popups. Here's how to get rid of it: Try uninstalling using Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel. If there does not appear to be an uninstall program, try C:\program files\BackWeb\ and remove this directory. Run MSCONFIG (Start, Run, type MSCONFIG), check the Startup tab and disable anything related to BackWeb. Look for any .EXE file starting with BackWeb and delete it. "

And many more ideas about how to remove if the above has not helped.

    Well traced Pete.

I've been in two minds as to whether to disable Backweb. It's a pain.

Why do you need an update service running at startup and in the background? Couldn't it ask you if you would like to check for updates every few weeks?

Oh well, we must have our mouse software in top working condition :(

    Having a lovely time...NOT

I'll be the first to admit I'd much rather take the easy way out. I read the HP instructions, and I gotta admit I'm a bit nervous about going into recovery mode. I'm already outta my element (but I'm learning). Is there any way I can just reinstall backweb to get it to clean up? I gotta ask.

Take the easy way out ....
The Recovery will restore your system to the state in was in when delivered - the drive will be formatted and all your data wiped out along with any programs, etc you have installed. It's not worth the hassle, especially if your data is not backed up to an external source.

You can always check out the HP site for updates from time to time.

Does that mean that Backweb is not in "Add or Remove Programs "?
Did you try the subsequent steps in my post above?

    Cannot remove Updates from HP

This is my first post and I'm not sure if you will be able to understand my reply. In summary I read that I can delete the error message I constantly receive ie "runner error invalid backweb application ID 137903" by removing the Updates from HP program. I tried it and I get the message "invalid settings" and it will do nothing. Is there any other simple way to remove this program so I can make this error message "go away" permanently.
