My homepage has been hijacked by "securityuptodate.com ". I am not very knowledgeable on computers and I would like to know if the fix for this you have previously listed is something a beginner like me can accomplish?

    Thanks,
    Rodney

    Results from Safe Mode

I ran both programs from the safe mode; I think I did it correctly, and here are the results.

Also upon rebooting to the normal mode, I received the following "unable to start driver hpoipm07.exe" and it took 10 minutes for my desktop to populat. I do have high speed connection.

rjlu - Welcome to the Board :)

You are doing just great :)

The driver hpoipm07.exe is your printer driver - you may need to reinstall that, but more on that later.

You have a few more unwelcome guests in your computer.

Please download HijackThis again through Quicklinks in my signature and save it to a folder on your hard drive, say C:\HJT - not to the Desktop or a temporary location. When entries are fixed with HJT a backup is made to the folder from which HJT is run and this must be in a permanent location.

Please download the trial version of Ewido. When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu ". Do not run it yet.

Boot into Safe Mode and run Ewido

Click on the Scanner button in the left menu, then click on Complete System Scan. This scan can take quite a while to run.
If Ewido finds anything, it will pop up a notification. Please select "clean" and check the boxes "Perform action with all infections" and "Create encrypted backup" before clicking on OK.
When the scan finishes, click on "Save Report ". This will create a text file. Make sure you know where to find this file again.

Stay in Safe Mode and scan again with HJT, place a checkmark against these entries and hit Fix Selected ....

Boot into normal mode, scan again with HJT and post both the Ewido and HJT logs.

Here are both reports. On the HJT in the safe mode, the items you listed for me to check did not show up, or I did something wrong.

Before we go any further ....

    Your first HJT log ....

    Logfile of HijackThis v1.97.7
Scan saved at 7:19:22 PM, on 5/20/2004
Platform: Windows XP SP1 (WinNT 5.01.2600)
    MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.00 SP1 (6.00.2800.1106)

    Your last HJT log ....

    Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1
Scan saved at 7:27:05 AM, on 5/28/2006
Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600)
    MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.00 SP2 (6.00.2900.2180)

I can see that an old version of HJT was used for the first HJT log, but the scan date is 2004 and XP SP1 is running not XP 2.

Other differences - in the first log you are running Norton Antivirus and in the second Panda.

Did you post an old log from 2004 first??

Your current log looks clean to me.

    Thanks

I don't know if I did or not, if I did, it was by mistake because I did not know I even had this on my computer.

Do I need to send you something else?

Should I delete all the programs you had me download?

Thanks again for all your help, your site is great; I'll recommend it to others.

    Thanks again.

I would keep both HijackThis and Ewido for future use - especially Ewido, although you can always download again if required - your call :)

Is your computer now running OK?

Yes, it seems to be doing fine now, thanks.

Do I need to do anything with system restore?

    Yes

Turn off System Restore, reboot and turn it back on again. Some of your restore points will be inevitably infected - turning off System Restore will delete all the restore points.

    Slow on Start up

I have one more question, my PC takes about 5-7 minutes to boot up now when it used to take 1 minute. Once it is finally up, everything else seems to be okay.

Previously I had Norton Anti Virus and switched to Panda when I started having problems, could Panda be causing this?

Thanks again for all your help.

Is there disk activity during those 5 - 7 minutes - hard drive light flashing?

It is possible that Panda is performing a system scan at start up - I have no experience of that particilar software.

You can check it out by physically disconnecting from the internet - pull the cable from the back of the computer. Disable the antivirus from running at start up and reboot the computer and see if it makes any difference.

Re-enable the antivirus before connecting to the Internet.

If the problem persists post a new thread in the XP forum, referencing this one.
