How can I stop email addresses from becoming links in an Excel worksheet? It's very annoying when I click on a cell and have my mail programme window open up.
    Thanks in advance,
    Jo

In Excel 2003 - may be the same for 2002. The email address will always become a link - part of Office's integation in the Web, but ....

Select a cell that has a hyperlink in it

Thanks Pete, I'd found that advice in the help file but unfortunately it only works when you deliberately click on a cell. I'm finding it such a hassle when I accidentally click on a cell. I end up with all these Outlook windows open and it won't let me just close them - I have to individually say "no, I don't want to save this email ". Grr. I need to be more careful where I click.
    Cheers,
    Jo

Boppy, navigate to the cell with the hyperlink (e-mail address) in it using the arrow keys, then right click on the hyperlink. You will get a drop down box, select "hyperlink" from the list then click on "remove hyperlink ". You will have to do this for each cell that has a link in it. Be sure to save your worksheet after or it will revert. Doesn't appear to be a global "deactivate hyperlink" setting in Excel.

I don't know about in newer versions, but in Excel 2000 type an apostophe in front ot the address to identify it as text. It does not work to just format the cell as text and enter the adress, though.

You can also copy the linked address from the cell it is in and right click another cell, select paste special, and then values only to paste just the value into the new cell.
