Hi, I wonder if anyone could help me? A few days ago I came onto the computer to find that I had this spyfalcon virus, and my homepage was constantly changed to safetyuptodate, which has now changed to securityuptodate. There are lots of pop ups and random security messages all the time. I tried to get rid of this, but i've had no success.

I have read a few other peoples posts and I had downloaded Smitfraudfix. I ran the program, and selected option 1 etc, this is the 'rapport' from that search:

    SmitFraudFix v2.48

OS: Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600]
    Fix ran in normal mode

    Hello Lucy and welcome,

Two additional tools to use and post logs for:

    Download Ewido http://www.ewido.net/en/

Install as a scanner only: under "Additional Options ", uncheck "Install background guard ".

    Before using it, update it.

Post anything it finds here, may need more than one post for it.

When you scan in safe mode: tap the F8 key on bootup.

    Download and run HijackThis:

Download from here http://radiosplace.com/ latest version 1.99

Download it to it's own folder, for example create a folder C:\HijackThis

unzip (double click on zipped folder)

    click on the execute

click scan button, scan in safe mode as well

click save log and save to the folder you just created

copy resultant .txt file and paste into your next post.

    Regards - Charles

    Lucy

Before you run HijackThis as Charles posted please do the following ....

You may like to print out these instructions as you will be unable to connect to the Internet to read them while in Safe Mode.

Boot into Safe Mode and log onto your usual account.
In Safe Mode, open the SmitfraudFix folder again and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd

Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ? "; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter ".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process. A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process - a copy of this file is saved as C:\rapport.txt.

Reboot into Safe Mode, doubleclick on hijackthis.exe and select scan and save a log file - this will be saved in the folder ftom which you ran HJT.

Reboot into Normal Mode and post the contents of the SmitfraudFix log located at C:\rapport.txt and the HJT log into your next post in this thread.

    Hi Lucy

Please reboot into Safe Mode, scan with HJT and place a check mark against these entries and click on Fix Selected ....

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [clock does] C:\PROGRA~1\BIKEFA~1\Name chin.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [JVM0.12] C:\WINDOWS\system32\pfqkipok.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NI.UWA6P_0001_N822M1605] "C:\Documents and Settings\Lucy\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\6DVO10BI\WinAntiVirusPro2006Free Install[1].exe" -nag

Reboot into normal mode and clean out your Temporary Internet files.

I notice that you are running two antivirus programs - Norton and AVG. This is not recommended due to possible conflicts - I suggest you remove one or the other.

Scan again with HJT and post the log here.

I am puzzled as to why Ewido has ignored rather than fixed everything it found. Until Charles chips in with a possible explanation I suggest you scan again in Safe Mode and post a fresh log here too.

    Hi Pete,

A couple ot items of concern ....

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [webHancer Survey Companion] "C:\Program Files\webHancer\Programs\whSurvey.exe "

Ewido claimed to have fixed this, but if you did not reboot before scanning with HJT that could explain why it is still there.

However I suggest you run the webHancer removal tool following the instructions on the Symantec site.

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NI.UWA6P_0001_N822M1605] "C:\Documents and Settings\Lucy\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\6DVO10BI\WinAntiVirusPro2006Free Install[1].exe" -nag

Little information about this on Google, so I am suspicious, especially when looking at it's location. Did you clean out your Temporary Internet files as requested? Do you recall downloading WinAntiVirusPro2006Free?

When you have done the above scan again with HJT and post another log.

We are getting there :) I'll check back in the morning - it's getting late here.

Also in response to your questions, yes I did delete the temporary internet files and no I don't recall ever installing WinAntiVirusPro2006Free. Its possible my parents may have downloaded it, as they get a little click-happy and download anything at all thinking there is no threat. I'll ask them if they remember anything like that in the morning.

    Thanks again :)

    Although this entry remains ....

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NI.UWA6P_0001_N822M1605] "C:\Documents and Settings\Lucy\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\6DVO10BI\WinAntiVirusPro2006Free Install[1].exe" -nag

your log is clean and WebHancer has bit the dust :)

Having looked further I am convinced that this does not pose a threat - only 2 hits on Google, neither of which are conclusive, one way or another.

Is the computer now running without any problems?

I am surely not awake this morning :( I omitted to give you the final instruction which is ....

Turn off System Restore (right click on My Computer > Properties > System Restore tab), reboot and turn on System Restore. This deletes all the restore points which inevitably contain the infections - none of which you would want to restore :)
