i have a creative 52x cd rom and a benq 32x cd writer, my pc meets the spec required to run both.

i'm trying to backup an audio cd. i'm unsure as to weather my creative cd rom is only capable of reading audio at 7x
this seems really slow, i'm using nero v5.5.7.1 (burning rom) software. it takes about 6 mins to copy a audio disc to the h/drive and another 2-3mins to write, because of it being unstable at burning at 12x "on the fly"

do i need a new std cd rom that will read audio at a greater speed or am i missing some kind of setting out???? help!!!!

As I understand it when you pull audio from a CD your CD-ROM uses DAE (Digital Audio Extraction) The DAE rate on your CD-ROM is usually different than the data read rate.

For example, I have an early Delta 50x cd-rom. It reads data at 50X but the DAE speed of it is pitifully low - something around 10-12x.

As a result, making a copy of a music cd for me can be painfully slow. See if you can find out the DAE rate of your cd-rom. It may be that that's causing your instabillity when 'burning on the fly' If your CD-ROM can't perform DAE fast enough for the burner you're going to get coasters.

Anytime you burn on the fly you're more susceptible to errors than when you copy to the HD and then burn. As a general rule I find that the slower I burn my audio the less problems I encounter.

    Gary.

iceolated is on the right track. Check Creative's website to see what the DAE rate is for your CD Drive. It may be less than the read speed. You may find that your burner can extract at a much higher rate (check its DAE speed too).

I have a TDK velocd burner. According to the box it can extract and read at the same max speed (48x). So if copying CDs (excuse me I mean backing up :) ) is your primary interest you may want to invest in a new burner. I can copy the CD to my HDD @ 48x and then burn it to a CD @ 40x. Thats pretty quick!

    Back in the old days...

I remember when some of the first IDE 32x or 40x drives appeared.

Several of my friends who were diehard gamers praised these new drives... So I went out and got one for myself.

The first time I tried to extract audio I found out how pittyfull these IDE drives DAE was - about 3.7x

I bit the bullet, I forked over $171 for a Plextor UltraPleX PX-32Tsi Ultra SCSI CDrom and have not looked back.

Its DAE is about 17x and it will read CD's most drives reject. - not bad for a 4 yr old drive.

Gremlyng is a mate of mine, we took the Benq cdr back to the suppliers today, and they replaced it with a Liteon 32x12x40, with no extra charge, result!!!!

For some reason, the Benq wouldn't really copy "on the fly ", it would only burn from an image on the HDD(all done in one procedure). We tried my Sony cdr in his pc, and it worked as well as it did in mine.

We have since burnt 2 audio cd's on the fly, no probs, although it is quite slow (About 9-12 minutes), I think this is down to the cdrom (Audio read 7x), so he's ordered a new one, another Liteon would you believe (52x), so I think his problems are pretty much solved ;)

    Dig.
