Following bootup which takes about 1-1/2min to bring up my desktop it then takes an awefully long time for the taskbar to kick in.
During the long interval between the desktop and the taskbar load the desktop goes blue (which I don't figure is a problem...but thought it best to mention) before the taskbar loads.

This slow load hasn't always been the case so I figure if I posted the hijack log then perhaps a problem might be identified there.

Nothing of any real consequence in your HJT log - a few missing files which you could fix in HJT - scan again and place a check mark against each of these entries and click on Fix Selected.

How much RAM do you have on that computer?

I would try reinstalling the video drivers to see if that fixes the blue screen problem Another idea would be to change the desktop theme > Apply and then change it back to the original.

    Sorry for the delay.

I have modified a essentials like upgrading RAM..now over IGB
Have offloaded some files as my HD was full...now reduced to about 76%.

However, none of this seems to have helped the boot process which goes like:

From BOOT to Desktop takes about 3minutes................HOWZAT???

    1. Boot to XP about 20sec
    2. XP to Blank screen about 1minute
    3. Blank to WELCOME about 20seconds
    4. Welcome to Desktop (incomplete taskbar)about 20seconds
    5. Desktop to Blue blank screen about 1minute
    6. Blank blue screen to DESKTOP about 13seconds

IS that normal????? I doubt it

    Hi Roy,

I see you have 4 security apps running real time that together might cause delays.

Spybot - Windows Defender - and your AV and ZA.

You might try disabling Spybot from starting, and booting up, then disable WD with Spybot enabled, and booting up.

    Regards - Charles

The one thing that I noticed is whenever you install security software, you will lose some performance. There isn't too much you can do about it.

    Hi Roy66
Comparing to the information in Arie's link, it is taking a lot of time at the beginning of the boot. The blank screen is when the graphics drivers are loading and 20 seconds is quite long. I would look at upgrading the drivers, starting with the motherboard chipset drivers and then the graphics drivers. Look in Device Manager for if any drivers are listed as having a problem (although this is not always a good indication because Windows can run the drivers, but they may not be making the hardware work correctly).

    Use this with BootVis:
    Matt
PS After doing a lot of uninstalling run Defragmentation and I would run Checkdisk (chkdsk)

Have followed most of the advice given but am a bit lost on how to carry out Mattmans instructions.

PC gets to Desktop a bit faster now but hangs FOREVER before it will load Taskbar.

I don't see anything of concern in your HJT log - I'll leave Matt to pursue the other matters :)

I would go in this order:
    Check disk:
    http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=315265
Perform a full set of tests, so use the "repair errors" options.
Edit: This takes a fairly long time so be ready to let it run for a few hours.

    Defragmentation:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314848/en-us
Edit: Defragmentation may take an hour or two.

    BootVis from Arie's link:
    http://www.helpwithwindows.com/download/bootVis-tool.exe

To find updated drivers you will need to know the model number of the motherboard or the model number of the computer itself if it is a branded computer like a Dell, HP, Compaq, Gateway, etc. Do you have the manual/s that came with the computer?
Everest in my signature may be able to identify the hardware. Post back with some details about the computer if you need more help.

    Matt

In over my head here now.

    Did checkdisk
    Defrag
    Bootvis
    Virus check.
I was hoping to transfer data using the Files and Transfer wizard before it got soooooooooooo slow but it beat me to it...sigh.
System has gotten progressively worse so decided to do an XP repair.
For whatever reasons this would not finalize in spite of repeated attempts.
Have been trying and trying for hours on end.
Used to get to about 39minutes left to completion but then it would just hang each time.
NOW it has become tired of repeated attempts and says it cannotset the required configuration....internal Setup error. Contact system Administrator...not much point in that...as he is I.
I am now trying to do a repair but don't know what to insert after 1: C:\WINDOWS

Fortunately I have a laptop to connect to the net.

Would a reinstall of XP (if possible) remove current data?

    How to: http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

Yes, if you are going to re install, create a OS only partition, and another for data to avoid this problem. At the top of the XP section, read the thread by Christer.

This now sounds like a HD problem.

What you can do is download and try to run the manufacturer's disk diagnostic tool.

    Regards - Charles
