Using Windows Update, I have managed to install the following definition update 3 times. It shows up 3 times in the list of installs, Windows update still tells me I need to install this update. Obviously this is not hurting anything other than the possibility of preventing my installing any future Defender definitions. Anybody encountered this or have any suggestions?

Definition Update 1.14.1452.3 for BETA Windows Defender (KB915597)

    Thanks

Sorry just noticed that this problem is being addressed in another post at
    http://www.windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?t=53143

Not sure how to merge this one with that one.

I have not uninstalled or reinstalled Defender, just have been happily? accepting the updates as they come thru. (only for defender not some of the others which are creating havoc.

jorjab--Maybe uninstall it (Control Panel|Add/Remove), reinstall WD itself, and then the update.
Definition Version: 1.14.1452.3 is the latest, so nothing is being blocked--yet, anyway.
    Full details on latest WD:
    Windows Defender Version: 1.1.1347.0
    Engine Version: 1.1.1372.0
    Definition Version: 1.14.1452.3

That did it. For some reason I have not been getting the latest versions of Defender. Everything looks good now.

    Thanks:)

    jorjab--Thanks for posting back.
It did not occur to me that you did not have the latest WD version, so I am glad I posted that info.
It is a failing of WD that WD makes no announcement of new versions, only new definitions.
So now we all know what effect that might have.

    Updating Windows Defender??

I just Give up!! Now when my Microsoft says that I have updates ready for my computer. I check to see what they are, and if they say {New Definitions for Defender} I automatically uninstall Defender including my short cut.

Then go to Defender's download page ,which I have set up as a short cut, reinstall - update on the Defender home control page- make a short cut to use Defender. Then wait until Microsoft says that I have more New Defender Definitions and I just repeat my actions. loonychoons P.S. This should insure that I have the latest version and definitions.

loonychoons--I would not be sure that you have the latest definition updates when you reinstall the WD program, but I have no personal experience.
The latest definition updates came today and, after installation, when I click the down arrow at the right of the WD Toolbar| About Windows Defender, I am told
    Windows Defender Version: 1.1.1347.0
    Engine Version: 1.1.1440.0
    Definition Version: 1.14.1459.12

Looks like I got a new engine version , too.

P.S. I did not uninstall WD before I installed the new definitions.

    Jim.

Hi Jim: loonychoons -Lenny- here. Actually I got the new engine also! when I downloaded a new Windows Defender from {http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/about/overview.mspx} I now have the same specs as you. After I get the latest I am asked if I would like to update? I allow that, but this is only good until {MICROSOFT UPDATE} thinks that my defender should be updated " even though I update regularly through Defender it's self. When that happens I just go ahead and Remove, Reinstall the latest Defender offered on their Home Page and update.

As , my system Just will not leave me alone, and keeps at me, to update over and over and over!!! I have just decided to live with this until the Beta is over or they fix it. Thanks for your concern ,Lenny.

P.S. this also makes sure that I get the latest Version , Engine And Definitions that are availably as Microsoft will not always let you know that there is a new Version or Engine for WD.

Jim: Just to remind you of the Updating problems that I had and still have -see- http://www.windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?t=53143

    Jim:

No I have not posted to the News group as PeteC suggested Because? There are others that have posted the same Problem there ,But no one seems to have an Answer, I also find that bulletin Board a little intimidating and extremely difficult {at least for me} to navigate! I tried to contact Microsoft through that contact that I had Last year, But was informed that they are are not supporting the Beta Defender as of yet. Thanks Lenny

My wife and I have Sunbelt's CounterSpy. It's only $19.95 a year and it is well worth every penny. It has uncovered spyware missed by Ad-aware, Spybot and Spyware Blaster. I should add that it uses the same engine (formerly Giant) used by MS's Defender. They have enhanced the engine and will soon be making available a newly upgraded product. You really should take a look at it.

    All the best.

    Jim:

I have install the trial version of Counterspy. So far So good, one thing though I was sure that I asked for the PDF Manuel, but it did not ask me where to install it? Now I can not seem to locate that file? Was it read only off of the screen? Also after I ran a scan it found 35 low-risk items, but only let me Quarantine 1 item? Did I do something wrong? Thanks Lenny P.S. my last Defender definition update went perfect { for Now ? } and only asked for the same update once. Maybe they fixed it?

    Hi Lenny,

If by chance you're running both WD and CounterSpy realtime - don't, there is a very real possibility of them interfering with each.

I don't run either one, so can't answer your questions on CounterSpy.

    Regards - Charles

    Charles:& Jim

    Charles: I do believe that you are right! I have just run into problems with my Sunbelt Counterspy {I think that they are now affiliated with McAfee as McAfee & Sunbelt both sent me an E-mail right after I downloaded the Counterspy trial version}

Jim: This looks like a very good version , if I had not got Defender back on track, {seems to be still behaving itself } I certainly would have purchased it, and who know what the future will bring? I have uninstalled Counterspy for now as i does not like the sharing with Defender.

I truly hope that Microsoft has fixed that {electronic rat} that was screwing up the works when updating.

Thanks to you Both . for your Interest and concern with my problem Lenny

lenny--My role was small, but you are welcome!!
P.S. I run AdAware, SpywareBlaster and Windows Defender. As you know, only WD actively runs when the PC is on. AdAware runs only when you scan. Never had any problems--either with program conflicts or with Malware attacks.

Looks Like Microsoft has Fixed Updating?

My system is working "A1" now ,I get a notification that Microsoft has new updates for my XP.

I go to my Microsoft update page, Ask for updates! then Presto I get them, If for my system I download and Install And They are successful.

If they are NEW ITEMS for Defender I download and they actually go where they are supposed to and Voilà all goes well and the latest definitions or whatever, are installed properly and THIS IS THE IMPORTANT PART they are recognized by my system as actually being there.

Thanks to everyone that helped me, but waiting for Microsoft to fix their problem was the right option, I feel, {especially when it is still a BETA release} loonychoons
