    A long shot:

Go to Network Settings, is the box for "QoS Packet Scheduler" checked? If it is, then uncheck it. (I have everything unchecked, except TCP/IP).

    Hi Bob,

You can use msconfig - autoruns just makes that process easier.

    Hi Guys.

I now believe I know what caused this problem (but not the solution)

Apparently my lovely daughter (student!!!) decided that it would be good to network my PC with her laptop and downloaded a prog called "Network Magic" http://www.networkmagic.com/ on to both machines.

It didn't do what she wanted so she uninstalled it but ever since, neither machine can download using !E. She has queried them but they insist that their prog doesn't do anything to IE but, since it affected both machines, it must be the culprit.

    Hi Bob,

Noticed from the site that one of the features is: Firewall setting management. Automatically configures Windows XP SP2 firewalls for Windows networking.

Check to see whether Windows firewall is running.

One way to make sure its not running: Start > type services.msc into the run box > ok.

On the Services page, scroll down to Windows Firewall > click on the line and Stop the service and in the drop down menu disable it. That'll keep it from starting.

    Regards - Charles

Post the output from ipconfig /all here. Go to Start > Run and type ipconfig /all > ipconfig.txt, click OK.

Find the text file ipconfig.txt on your system & copy/paste the info here.

Also check Tools > Internet Options from IE's menu. Select LAN Settings & see if a Proxy server is enabled.

I think the problem may be with your FTP ports. FTP is a peculiar protocol that uses two ports: data is returned on a different port to that requesting the data. Any firewalls have to be FTP aware to cope with this. If you've managed to block ALL incoming ports, you'll stop FTP working.

If this is the case, there is a way to find out. Try a couple of downloads from MySQL.
Don't worry about what you are downloading. Just delete the files after you've downloaded them (assuming something does come down) once you've completed the tests. Unless you want a MySQL query browser of course :)

Scroll down the page (ignore the form), to the lower part that include links to down load the files. The key point is that from this page you can download the same files using either HTTP or FTP. First try downloading the file by clicking on one of the FTP links. Then try downloading the file by one of the HTTP links.

If I am right the HTTP link will work, but the FTP one won't. How do you get on?

Interesting result. It could be that the site links aren't labelled correctly, but I am starting to think this is an IE issue. OK next test will do two things: double check that HTTP file download is failing, but FTP file download is OK; and give you an alternative to IE to test with.

Go the Opera download page and download Opera. Again this is a download site that allows you to choose whether to download by FTP or HTTP (hence me suggesting Opera rather than Firefox, the download page for which doesn't give you the option.). Try downloading with HTTP first. If the previous test was right, then this will fail. You should then be able to download with FTP.

Once you've downloaded Opera install it (it is a splendid web browser, so definitely worth a look at). Then try downloading stuff with Opera. If this works fine for both FTP and HTTP downloads, this will tell us that this isn't a network problem, but rather an IE problem, and we can move on from there.

Many thanks to you all for your help and advice.

I now believe that the problem was caused by "Trend Micro Security ". This came as a free ad-on with my netgear router and I had recently enabled it, together with its auto-update.

My guess is that a recent update created a conflict somewhere because once I disabled it the downloads worked OK (and still do).

    Hi Bob, thanks for solution.

Now that you can download, go back to post #19 and download autoruns, it makes disabling startups much easier than using msconfig.
