    Hello community,
Like some people, I resist asking for help. But this problem is haunting me. So I humbly ask for help. Here are the facts, as I see them.

Machine: Dimension 4100, 1.1 mhz, 512 mb Ram, XP Pro SP2, latest updates/drivers.

    Problem: CPU freeze/unfreeze

Specifics: Whenever this starts, it ALWAYS goes this way---5 second freeze, 30 seconds unfreeze (CPU runs normally), then 10 second freeze, then 50 second unfreeze (runs normally); then it returns to the 5-sec, 30-sec, 10-sec, 50-sec cycle and loops. Only way to remove problem is to shutdown; but the very last phase of shutdown does not complete, requiring what we retired IBMers called the BRS solution (Big Red Switch to power off the offending hardware ..ha). Subsequent re-starting computer is normal and problem not present until it decides to manifest (see details below)

History: When this first started (8-10 months ago), I searched MS Knowledge Base and found the identical problem occurs when using Iomega Parallel Port Disk Drive. I immediately removed that hardware and software and never used it again. And the problem disappeared. BUT some months after this, the problem reoccurred! Wow! Went back to MS KB to find the original article…none to be found!?! Continue to live with problem; but decided to seek help on this forum. Thanks to anyone with suggestions.

Details: Seems to start after a long idle period (more than 10-15 minutes), but not always. Probably not related to internet as it does occur when cable modem is disconnected. Not related to Firefox as happens with Firefox uninstalled. Can be connected to internet and doing local processing (no net browsing) and have not noticed freezing. Interesting note: After a CPU start and run for some time without problem, I create a Restore Point. Then later in same startup or a later re-boot, when the problem does manifest, I can execute that previous Restore Point and the problem does go away. (but I can loose some other things that way). Seems that something gets "added" to the System Registry and that "something" is initiating this freeze problem. I don’t know what else to try, except to ask this very knowledgeable community. THANKS. :)

PS Forgot to say that I regularly use 5 spyware programs and the antivirus portion of ZoneAlarm Security Suite. Always finding stuff to remove, but doesn't seem related to problem.

Sounds like it could be several different causes, in this order:

    1. undetected spyware - download HijackThis, do a scan & post the scan log in this thread.
    http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/downloads.html

    2. dust in case - take box outside, remove side panel & blow out dust using an air compressor or exhaust from a shop-vac.

    3. it's possible that after you removed the Iomega Parallel Port Disk Drive & it's software that system restore retained registry values for the Iomega and subsequent restores put back the Iomega reg values; & the problem recurrs.

    4. other hardware or software glitch best known to God & Gates.

Subsequent restore...goes along with my thinking. I was going to suggest installing the Iomega software again and when it has finished installing (after rebooting) uninstall it again.

Is anything running on the parallel port at the moment?

You may want to try uninstalling the parallel port in Device Manager (it will be automatically reinstalled at restart).

I can only see that problem related to Win NT:
    http://support.microsoft.com/search...ast=1,2,3&mode=a&adv=1&spid=global&range=1-21
    See anything you remember?

    Hi TonyT

    1. Downloaded and ran HijackThis, did scan and log, have log, went to your URL to post scan log and got lost. Help.

    2. Box is reasonalbly dust free but will do anyway later.

    3. Don't follow you here. Are you saying that "something" from Iomega could stay in the System Registry after uninstall? Even through various "registery" cleanings? And I am obviously not using the originally created "restore" as I have done many dozens of "create restore points" and only use the most recent one. Lose too many things otherwise.

    4. No comment

    Hello Mattman

    Thanks for the comments.

See my comment about "restore" in my reply to TonyT.

Nothing ever runs on parallel port since removal of Iomega ZIP drive.

Did do the uninstall of parallel port in Device Manager and it was automatically reinstalled at restart. Cannot say if that helped because problem has not returned since the uninstall.

Followed your URL re WIN NT and could not find anything similar to my previous find that exactly matched my problem which I have dubbed the 5-30-10-50 freeze/unfreeze loop.

More later if 5-30-10-50 returns.

It sounds to me that it has "reverted" to the original problem somehow. When I saw Tony's mention that it could be due to a restore, that sort of confirmed my thinking. Registry Cleaners find "dead-ends" and things that won't work. I have a feeling that this is some type of modification to existing registry keys, so a reg cleaner won't identify it. Reinstalling and uninstalling the Iomega software may undo the modification.

It may have been a modification to the way the parallel port runs and hopefully resetting those drivers may have overcome the problem, but if you came across some sort of problem now and used Restore to a time prior to resetting the drivers, the problem will be there again. If it seems stable, make a restore point now.

    Matt

There have been reporetd issues w/ .NET version 2 such as comp slowdowns, sluggishness, etc. Go to add-remove programs & uninstall .NET 2.0 & see if problem goes away. If no joy, download & reinstall .NET 2.0, but DISABLE real time antivirus during the installation. get .NET 2.0 here

    Hi Tony,

Went to AddRemove to uninstall .NET v 2.0 but it is not listed, only v 1.0 with a 1.0 hotfix. However I scanned the above HijackThis log and found instances of .NET v 2.0 with "file missing" notations. I do not remember seeking an update to v 2.0 (maybe Automatic Updates). And to explain the missing file(s), maybe an unfinished install? Or maybe the real time anti-virus corrupted the automatic install? Would you still recommend v 2.0? wpofnc

Yes, install .NET 2.0 IF any of your installed programs need it. It may have beeen uninstalled at some earlier point and installing it now may remedy things.

Also, get rid of that Logiteck Desktop Messenger program. It gets installed automatically with Logiteck devices and it's purpose is to frequently check for Logitech updates & special offers. It's sort of an adware program and may be what is causing your slowdowns.
