I would appreciate if anyone could help me out here. I seem to have gotten a virus on my computer where if I search for a topic in any search engine, i.e. google or yahoo, and I click on the search result, it won't take me to that location. Instead it will take me to some advertisement link. I will have to go back and click on that result a few times before actually getting to the link I want to go to. It's very annoying and now other programs on my computer have been working improperly that had been working fine before.

I did a Hijack This scan and here is the log file:

RandyMan - Welcome to the Board :)

Please move HijackThis.exe to a folder on your hard drive, say C:\HJT - the desktop is not a suitable location as HJT makes a backup of any fixed items.

Restart the computer in Safe Mode and scan again with HJT.

Place a check mark alongside these items and then click on Fix Selected ....

    O9 - Extra button: PartyPoker.net (HKLM)
    O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: PartyPoker.net (HKLM)
    O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{0689CEC2-8D77-4684-9520-B9193268E020}: NameServer = 85.255.114.106,85.255.112.123

    O17 - HKLM\System\CS1\Services\Tcpip\..\{0689CEC2-8D77-4684-9520-B9193268E020}: NameServer = 85.255.114.106,85.255.112.123
    O17 - HKLM\System\CS2\Services\Tcpip\..\{0689CEC2-8D77-4684-9520-B9193268E020}: NameServer = 85.255.114.106,85.255.112.123

These two appear to be something to do with Yahoo! drivers for Japan - if you do not recognize them fix them too.

    O9 - Extra button: Yahoo!ƒƒbƒZƒ“ƒWƒƒ[ (HKLM)
    O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Yahoo!ƒƒbƒZƒ“ƒWƒƒ[ (HKLM)

Reboot and rescan with HJT and post another log.

I think this line may be the key ....

    O4 - Global Startup: winlogin.exe

This would appear to be associated with W32.Randex.E - see this article from Symantec ...
    See Removal Instructions.

I may well be wrong on this, but a check would do no harm.

It would appear from your HJT log that you are running 2 antivirus programs - Norton and F-Secure - would you confirm, please.

Running two antivirus programs concurrently is not advised as it is quite possible that one will conflict with the other. I suggest you disable one or the other.

It would also be worthwhile to run an online virus scan at Housecall - accessible through Quicklinks in my signature - post back on what it finds.

Thanks PeteC for you all of your help so far.

The redirect problem from the search engines seems to have been solved. But at the same time I encountered an even greater proble, which is frustrating me to no end and I figure it is somehow related to that redirect virus.

The problem is that very often when I open up a folder in MyDocuments or start running certain programs, or even try to run a scan from Housecall, a message will pop up saying that the program has encountered a problem and will need to shutdown, whether it be Internet Explorer, Windows Explorer, any instant messenger.

I haven't been able to even do a Housecall scan because IE keeps shutting down on me midway through the scan. I have been able to do other scans with other programs that have found problems though which I deleted.

Here is my latest Hijack This log file... if there is any way you could help, I'd be so appreciative. Thank you!

BTW, the F-secure program has been disabled, so I only have symantec running.

Thank you to both of you again.

I performed the HJT but it said that I could not fix the Global Startup: winlogin.exe because the application was in use. I tried looking for it in the Task Manager but couldn't find it.

As for the image.dll and system32\sysstartup.exe I wasn't able to find those files in searches. When I perform the search, explorer shuts down on me. Here's my latest and greatest HJT log:

OK - the entries have not returned with the exception of winlogin.exe.

Download WinloginRemove .exe from Doug Knox Run it as instructed, reboot and see if you can then delete winlogin.exe. Post another HJT scan from Safe Mode.

Hmm - just realised that you may not be able to download so I have attached the file as you can clearly get here - on one computer or another.

No corruption - downloads as a .php due to a quirk in the BBS software (which I should have remembered :( ). Simply change the extension to .zip.

For some reason, the above program is not reporting any occurances of winlogin.exe on the computer...

One other thing... if I try searching the computer for winlogin.exe, I can't find it anywhere. How can that be?

Assuming you are using the search function in Windows Explorer are you setting it to search hidden files and folders?

Please take a look in Startup .....

Start > Run > type in msconfig > OK. Go to the startup tab - do you see it there?

Yes, I do see it there. Should I disable in that Startup Tab? How should I continue from here?

    Thank you again.

Do not disable the entry for the moment - I would like to try a more fundamental approach using the removal instructions at Trend Micro .....

You may like to print this out before proceeding.

Please log onto this page .....

    http://www.trendmicro.com/vinfo/virusencyclo/default5.asp?VName=WORM_RPCSDBOT.A&VSect=Sn

and click on the link for Trend Micro System Cleaner under the first heading AUTOMATIC REMOVAL INSTRUCTIONS

Go to the section If you are not a Trend Micro customer and follow the instructions there and download Sysclean Package.

Read and print out readme sysclean.txt from the link in the same section.

Note that you must download and place the latest pattern file in the same folder as the Trend Micro Sysclean Package.

That can be downloaded from http://www.trendmicro.com/download/viruspattern.asp - lpt447.zip

Follow the instructions under How to Use in the readme sysclean.txt and then post the contents of the SYSCLEAN.LOG here.

BTW - it has been pointed out to me that you are using an old version of HJT - please download the latest version of HJT through Quicklinks in my signature v1.99.1 and discard the older version.

Run a further scan with HJT once you have run the removal tool and post a copy of the log here .
