Well, the test post worked. My problem..... Four days ago I installed windxp pro oem (version 2002) on my computer which I had been using w98se for a number of years. I followed all instructions to the T. Everything seemed to go fine. Yesterday I ran a anti-virus scan thinkiing I had a bug. Not one was found but there were 24 warnings. These referenced system files which could not be opened. This may explain why the windows programs "System Information ", windows help and scandisk will not function. When you click on them, you get the wait sign, then nothing. In fact Scandisk is not even listed as an option under system tools. This computer will not do a POWER OFF or RESTART on its own either.I have tried system restores to an earlier period. That didn't work. An external virus/worm/malware scan revealed nothing. I've not done "Repair Install" yet. Any suggestions or info would be appreciated. Thanks:confused:

    Hello bill,

    Two things to try:

chkdisk takes the place of Scandisk on XP.

All programs > System Accessories > System tools > Chkdisk. It will not run in normal mode, it'll ask you if you want to run it on next bootup, the system wll then run chkdisk in safe mode.

See how your scanner will run in safe mode - tap the F8 key on bootup.

    Regards - Charles

Thanks Charles.... In both safe mode or normal mode, the system tools menu does no have chkdisk or scandisk offered. Its not there. I've managed to run the sfc/scannow from command prompt, but don't know the results. Where might I find them? The other day I managed to run scandisk which said it would run on next boot. It did and fixed (if any) problems automatically.

OK, you were posting at the same time that I was...

Any changes by SFC are logged in the System log (accessible from Event Viewer)

To open Event Viewer, go to Start > Run and type eventvwr.msc, click OK.

O.K. Ran chkdsk /r and stated THIS DRIVE is CLEAN. Still doesent fix the problems. Perhaps winxp would not allow the virus scanner in the windows protected files . Anyhow that doen't explain why HELP; SYSTEM INFORMATION: will not open.
