My computer seems to have been infected with a virus. My anti-virus software expired and I did not renew or replace. I don't know what virus it is - my computer runs slow and freezes up on occassion, sometimes sends script error messages. Figuring that I could start over (I don't care if I lose data) I tried to re-install WindowsXP but it woudn't reinstall - it kept saying that various files were missing. Is this problem hopeless for those without technical skills? Is there a software package that will help? If this isn't the right site to get guidance, can someone send me to the right place. I went to a local "Staples" and asked a worker about "Norton systemworks 2006 Premier" which includes antivirus software but he advised me that software fixes don't work and that I need to have someone fix it for me. The cost is about $300; if it cost that much I need to decide whether or not I would be better off putting the $300 towards a new machine. Thank you for whatever wisdom you can share.

    Welcome to Windows BBS :)

FWIW, Norton SystemWorks 2006 Premier is $99 direct from Symantec:
    http://symantec.com/home_homeoffice/products/overview.jsp?pcid=sp&pvid=nswp2006

But, you don't need it to install Windows.

If you're having trouble installing Windows, there could be a problem with the PCs hardware or the Windows CD itself.

    How old is the computer?

Is your Windows CD legit and pristine (no scratches)?

Gordon - Welcome to the Board :)

This is very much the right site for guidance and we will do our best to get your computer fit and well again :D

    A few points first ....

Although your antivirus has expired it should continue to afford protection up to a point - that point being the latest definition files that were downloaded.

However I suggest you download AVG Free - a free version of AVG antivirus which is very effective and comes at the right price :) I use it on my laptop and install it on friends' computers that I maintain.

Uninstall your existing antivirus software first, reboot and then install AVG Free - check for updates and do a full System scan. Let us know if any virus was found.

Then download and run the trial version of Ewido. When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu ".

Boot into Safe Mode and run Ewido - full system scan, save the report and post it here.

    To start in Safe Mode
How did you attempt to reinstall XP - do you have a full install CD or a Restore CD?

Put your $300 towards a new computer in due course - we can recommend freeware which will do the job far more cheaply than Norton.

    Thanks

The computer is about three years old. The disks were pristine when I started but now appear to be damaged because they were running so much when I unsuccessfully tried to reload Windows.

I saw the instructions for clean loading. I plan on trying this weekend. Hopefully the disk will still work.

    Thanks
