Received a new scanner two days ago, but the software that came with it was really a horror. First, after reboot the desktop came up with the *XP* look (I had it set for classic view). Second, all the icons I'd created and half the programs in my 'start up' were gone. Lost my dsl connection too.

After more than 3 hours with their tech support they decided to send an updated version of the CD. (Thanks for Acronis True Image, must have restored about eleven times). Today, I received the new CD, with trepidation I began the install, lucked out - all looks well after reboot.

One difference. Previously when starting it would show the Windows logo and then go to my desktop, now, after the WinXP logo, it comes up with a split-type screen. On the left it says Windows XP and "To begin click on username ", on the right is the username - I click on it and I'm into the desktop. Is there a way to by-pass this second window? (Guess these last two days I've lost all train of thought).

How to turn on automatic logon in Windows XP - scroll to the end and follow the steps starting with ....
If your scanner drivers required - and loaded .NET this is a possible cause of the change.

Did the CD install .NET Framework 1.1?

If it did, go to Windows Update and install any and all "High Priority" updates to .NET Framework (excluding langauge versions). It should cure the login issue.
