I do not know what has happened as I am very careful about what webites I go to and very careful about what I open in my email. Yesterday I was walking through my computer room and saw a high risk alert box on the screen it says:

    Object name c:\WINDOWS\system32\ddcyy.dll
    Virus Name Trojan.Vundo
Action Taken Unable to repair file

I do have a firewall and I have Norton antivirus running all the time. I have tried Nortons removal tool for this thing but before it finishes scanning it says it has to shutdown (I have tried it 4 times). I have also tried to run it in safe mode but does the same thing.

I am at a loss. I don't know what to do or what to use to get rid of it. Can someone please help.

    Thank you...
    Karen

    Hello Karen,

When you get that message from NAV, NAV has quarentined the file.

Look around in the NAV Panel for the section that opens the quarented files. Should be under reports. It will tell you where it was; if in the Temporary Internet files, disconnect from the internet and delete the contents of the folder: Control Panel > Internet options > General tab > Temporary Internet Files section: delete files.

I've just gotten rid of NAV2005, my memory is already hazy

For a 2nd opinion and cross check:

Download and scan with Ewido http://www.ewido.net/en/

Install as a scanner only: under "Additional Options ", uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu ".

Before using it, update it. Post anything it finds here, may need more than one post for it.

    Regards - Charles

As I said in my first post I tried the tool from symantec 4 times and then tried it in safe mode also but the tool always has to shut down before it even gets done scanning so that won't work for me.

Sorry - missed that second time around.

There are other ways - please download HijackThis through Quicklinks in my signature, save it to a folder on your hard drive, say C:\HJT - not to the Desktop or a temporary folder.

Boot into Safe Mode and run HJT - select Scan and Save a log file - this will be saved in the same folder that you ran HJT from.

Boot into normal mode and paste the report into your next post here.

Here is the scan report from HJT. I downloaded the exe file and it went ahead and ran the scan and gave me this report. Should I go ahead and download the zip file instead and boot into safe mode and run it again?

    Thanks Karen..

    That's OK .....

Scan again with HJT and put a checkmark against these entries and click on Fix Selected ....

Then download VundoFix.exe and save it on the desktop.

    Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.

Click the Scan for Vundo button.

When the scan is complete click the Remove Vundo button.

You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES

Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.

When completed, it will prompt that it will shutdown your computer, click OK.

Reboot the computer abd scan again with HJT and post the log here.

A couple of other points from your log ....

You are running Service Pack 1 (SP1) - really you should upgrade to Service Pack 2 (SP2) for the added security it provides.

You are running two antivirus programs - Norton and AVG. Running two av's is not recommended due to possible conflicts and may well be the reason why the Norton Removal tool stalls.

ok had HJT fix those things then downloaded VundoFix and ran it and reran HJT and here is the log file from it..also about service pack 2...I have always heard so may bad things about it and all the conflicyts it causes with programs I have been afraid to install it for fear all my graphic programs and stuff will stop working. As for the 2 antivirus programs...the only reason they are both there is that I downloaded avg last night while trying to get rid of this Vundo thing I normally only run Norton and will be getting rid of AVG and the spyware removers I downloaded last night. I would appreciate it tho if you could tell me what would be the best programs to run for spyware etc.

Karen..ok here is the last HJT scan

That seems to have fixed it :)

Two programs I would recommend in the war against Spyware are Windows Defender and SpywareBlaster 3.5.

Windows Defender - to be included in the XP replacement Windows Vista next year gives real time protection, autoupdates and autoscans (note the default time for this is 2.00 am - need to change that unless your PC is on overnight.

SpywareBlaster 3.5 is not a scanner but provides permanent protection against over 6000 items of spyware, etc. Download, update and 'Enable all protection'. and then update manually every 2 weeks or so.

You might like to read the sticky at the head of the forum ....

Keep your Computer free from viruses .....

    Karen, you're welcome :)

This morning I noted that you are running two firewalls - Norton and Sygate. Microsoft recommends that only one firewall should be run to avoid conflicts.

As you are running SP1 in which the Windows firewall is turned OFF by default you should also check that this is OFF - run one of the firewalls only - Norton or Sygate - your choice.

    Hi Karen,

You're running SpywareDoctor realtime, don't use any other AS realtime, use them as on demand scanners only. That doesn't apply to Spywareblaster, should be run along with others.

SpywareDoctor is one of the best anti spyware programs and I wouldn't substitute Windows Defender for it, WD is a beta program.

You have Ewido on your system now, Ewido updates multiple times per day, use it to scan the system on a regular basis.

    Regards - Charles
