    Very repetitive I'm sure.

    As the broken record spins.
I have the Spyfalcon icon flashing in the tray from the green wheel chair symbol to the "anti" or "no" symbol.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Its good to see people who use there knowledge and talents for good not evil.
    Thank you in advance!

shaunjohnwood - Welcome to the Board :)

I have split your posts to a new thread to avoid confusion.

I think you may have more than Spyfalcon or one of it's aliases on board.

First clean out your Temporary Internet Files ....

Close Internet Explorer and Windows Explorer

Control Panel > Internet Options > General tab - Delete files (place a checkmark against Delete offline content) and click on OK

Down CWShredder through Quicklinks in my signature and run it.

Boot into Safe Mode and scan with HJT, place a check mark against these entries and hit Fix Selected ....

    O20 - Winlogon Notify: winbns32 - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\winbns32.dll

Reboot and navigate to C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32 and delete winbns32.dll if present (you may need to enable Show hidden files and folders through the Folder Options > View menu). Please confirm if present and if deleted.

Scan again with HJT and post the log - then we will go on to the next step.

Time for some brute force :)

Start HJT and click on 'Open the Misc tools section', then click on "Open process manager'. Locate this entry in the list, highlight it and click on 'Kill Process'....

    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\winbns32.dll

Now click on the 'Back' button, this button will change to 'Config', click on 'Config' then click on "Delete a file on reboot', a File Open window will appear. Copy/Paste the following into it....

    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\winbns32.dll

Then click on Open, and you will be prompted to reboot, select 'No' at this time.

Scan with HJT and place a checkmark against this entriy and click on 'Fix Selected' .....

    O20 - Winlogon Notify: winbns32 - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\winbns32.dll

Reboot and scan again with HJT and post another log.

    Not there.

the process C:\windows\system32\winbns32.dll was not found.

There was a check box to show .dll's.

I checked this box and the only thing which showed was C:\windows\system32\ntdll.dll

The strange thing is that Spyfalcon is not shown to be running in your HJT log.

Is there clear evidence from that icon you mention that it is definitely Spyfalcon - is there an entry in Add/Remove Programs for Spyfalcon? have no idea what the icon looks like as to date I have not been infected with anything malicious.

I will think about alternative solutions and come back to you today.

As an aside you may like to read ....

I am going to assume that something other than Spyfalcon is on your computer - maybe Systemuptodate.com in one of its various guises ....

Download SmitfraudFix - smitfraudfix.zip - this is a compressed file and the contents must be extracted to a folder on your Desktop.

As you are running XP you will be using the Extraction Wizard.

Right click on the zip file and click on Extract all.

The Extraction Wizard opens > click on next > Select a Destination > click on Browse > click on Desktop > click on OK > click on next and the files will be extracted. A Window will open showing the contents of your Desktop - close it and go to the Desktop and you should see a new folder on it - SmitfraudFix.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder again and double click on Smitfraudfix.cmd

If a Security Warning pops up hit the Run button

A command window appears > press any key to continue

On the line with the flashing cursor 'Enter your choice (1.2 ....) type 1 and press Enter

The program scans your system and when the scan has completed a Notepad window opens containing the scan report.

Select Edit from the menu bar then Select All from the dropdown menu - the text is highlighted in blue

Select Edit from the menu bar then Copy

Return to your thread here and hit Reply and right click on the white area of the message pane and select Paste from the menu which appears. The report will be pasted into your reply.

OK - we are making progress here ....

You may like to print out these instructions as you will be unable to connect to the Internet to read them while in Safe Mode.

Boot into Safe Mode and log onto your usual account.
In Safe Mode, open the SmitfraudFix folder again and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd

Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ? "; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter ".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process. A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process - a copy of this file is saved as C:\rapport.txt.

Reboot into Safe Mode, double click on hijackthis.exe and select Scan and save a log file. When the scan has finished a log file will appear in Notepad and will be saved in the same folder as you placed hijackthis.exe.

Boot into Normal mode and post the contents of of the SmitfraudFix log located at C:\rapport.txt into this thread along with the HJT log.

We are not out of the woods yet - there is malware re-appearing after removal by JHT, even though the problem of the taskbar icon appears to have been resolved.

I have noticed - should have checked before, that you are running XP completely unpatched without any Service Packs and are thus extremely vulnerable to a number of current explotis, etc. In addition, unless you are running SP1 at the very least you are unable to get any critical updates through Windows Update. I strongly recommend that you install Service Pack 2 (SP2), which is cumulative - SP1 is not required to be installed first, and to apply all subsequent patches - there are many.

Back to the task in hand ....

Some of the folowing actions may be unnecessary, but please do them anyway as they may help to fix the remaining infections - prosearching.com in particular.

Download CWShredder, save it to the desktop - double click the .exe file and check for updates and close. Do not run the program yet.

You already have Ewido installed - open Ewido and under additions click on Remove Guard if the option is there - you may need to reboot.

Reboot into Safe Mode and run CWShredder and click Fix if anything is found.

Stay in Safe mode and run Ewido - Full System Scan - clean up and save the report.

Still in Safe Mode scan with HJT (Scan only) and place a check mark against these entries, if present and click on Fix Selected....

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,SearchURL = prosearching.com
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,SearchURL = prosearching.com
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page_bak = prosearching.com
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [mfcmy32.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\mfcmy32.exe
    O20 - Winlogon Notify: winbns32 - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\winbns32.dll

Reboot into normal mode, scan again with HJT and post a new log together with the Ewido log.

I am asking a colleague on the Board for a second opinion on this so expect to see another name responding.

Good :) At last we seem to have cleared that pesky file winbns32.dll

Scan again with HJT and fix this entry, then your log looks clean :)

    O20 - Winlogon Notify: winbns32 - winbns32.dll (file missing)

Now that we have your system clean you should turn off System Restore, reboot and turn it back on again. This will delete all the restore points which will undoubtedly contain the infections that have been cleaned up - there's no way you would want to restore those!

I have alot of mish-mash that I would like to drop. Starting from fresh.
    Thank you very much!
Your help was very thourough and easy to follow!
I will definetly keep up on the Windows Updates and WindowsBBS!
