You should see an option to delete the partition. Do that and then recreate it and then format.

You cannot format a CD unless you use software such as InCd or Direct CD. The message you are getting indicates a possible fault with the drive.

This would appear to be a CD/DVD combo drive - i.e it will read CD's and DVD's. It is my understanding that the wavelength of the laser which reads (and writes) is different for CD's and DVD's. There are either two lasers in the drive or the wavelength is switched by software in the drive.

It is possible that the CD laser has failed, but you might try removing the drive through Device Manager and rebooting to reinstall it and it's drivers and see if that resolves the problem.

Another possibility is dust in the drive - if it is a fixed drive - with the tray open you can see the laser - just blow on it - don't rub it with anything. IF, as I think from your post it is an external drive blow or puff air in through the loading slot/flap ....

Dell replaced a drive for me on a two week old machine. I was pleasantly shocked that the new drive had a image of the original installation and all I had to do was plug it in and turn it on..

Try installing the Force ASPI drivers there could be some quirky settings going on.
