I am in DESPERATE need of help. My PC has been shutting itself down for no reason. I then realized that the "automatically shut down" feature was on. After that, I went to check the error logs. Over and over, sometimes up to 8 times a day (depending on my usage that day), it keeps popping up as an application error:

Faulting application spoolsv.exe, version 5.1.2600.1699, faulting module ntdll.dll, version 5.1.2600.1217, fault address 0x0002c32b.

I noticed another thread about this, but it did not have the same fault address and it was related to the printer. Mine is not. I have not noticed any one program that causes it to shut down and reboot. It does it while I am in different programs. I also cannot run any virus scans. It will shut itself down and reboot on its own during that as well. I use Spy Sweeper, AVG, and Zone Alarm (which has a built in virus sweep feature). All three of these programs will shut down at some point during the scan.

I do not know what is causing this, but I desperately need to fix it. It was already placed in the shop two weeks ago because my internet was connected but it wouldn't recognize the eternet card. After placing it in the shop, the card started working again. It is a built in adapter, shaped like a very small ring box. It is attached to the motherboard. This is the second time this has happened in the last 12 months or so-that is with the ethernet card adapter not working.

I don't know if I did something or not. I have system restored several times, each time doing back to the day it was in the shop right after they installed xp service pack 2 (which I know I already had on my pc). It has continued this behavior and the same error keeps popping up in the logs.

PLEASE help me. I am a working mom, in college completely online, and unable to pay for another shop visit. My computer is a staple. Thanks for all of your help.

    what are the machine details?

    make/model
    OS w/ any SP info

do u have any printer on this box? if so, make/model info please.

are u'r .dats updated to all the scanners u mentioned? - runnin 'em isn't enuff ;)

what happens if u boot in safe mode?

note - shutdowns can be worm related. there are many of them that specifically use the shutdown command to make the machine useless.

The version of spoolsv.exe from XP Sp2 = 5.1.2600.2696, so you do not seem to have the latest version installed.

I suggest either re-installing SP2, or running Windows XP's System File Checker Tool.

I have windows XP Professional, and it says I have service pack 2 installed.

Thanks for the mention of service pack 2. I realized the other day that is wasn't in the "add/remove programs" menu. I have tried three times today to install it, and each time the system shuts down not quite halfway through. It reboots and then I get a message that I need to uninstall it because the system is unstable. I don't quite understand. I even restored my pc back to the day the computer guys were working on and the restore point says "installed service pack 2," but still I have problems and it doesn't seem to show the service pack installed. I looked into the download history, and each time it is marked as cancelled.

I was reading up on several other sites sbout the spoolsv.exe and they said it is due to a printer que in microsoft image writer. Well, I couldn't find that but instead found image composer. I unstalled it and blocked spoolsv, exe on my firewall, which seems to keep it out of the processes. I have no printers installed (I don't have one currently). But my pc still keeps shutting itself down. Most recently, after unchecking the "shut down automatically" box, I get the blue screen which says that process c0000135 winsrv failed to activate or load (not sure the exact word).

I am still trying to install pack 2, but I can't seem to get it to complete the process. What can I do?

Oh yeah. I couldn't get it to boot in safe mode after I got the blue screen. I honestly don't know how (after many tries) I was able to get back into windows after trying to reboot. Like I said, the system keeps shutting down on its own. I think that I had to check to reboot it in the last known configured part, and had to wait about 10 minutes for it to go through another blue screen telling me it didn't boot up right and it had to be configured. It then had a lot of periods coming up under it, and after about 10 minutes and a bunch of ..................................... it started. I am so lost and so dependant on this machine. I desperately need help. Thanks for helping in any way possible.
