Hi, I've got a problem with XP:COM Event Receiver and my Connections Tray crashing (freezing) on me when downloading large files... I am unable to restart or shut down Windows without pushing the restart button. A quick google search shows there could be a problem with Firefox, but I have the latest release, and I'm also getting this problem with Azureus and FlashGet too.

Several times I've tried removing Firefox, Azureus, FlashGet, and my modem drivers, then reinstalling everything, one at a time, in different orders, but the problem is still there.

    Any suggestions?

    Hi,

See if there is any information in your event logs that might point you in the right direction.

To open Event Viewer, go to Start > Run and type eventvwr.msc, click OK.

Check your Application and System logs for errors.

You can double click on any error for more details, and there is also a button to copy the error to your clipboard for easy copying & pasting.

1st step is to make sure your DNS is working properly. Are you using your ISP's DNS servers? Are they entered as Preferred and Alternate, or set to Obtain DNS server address automatically?

How are you connected to the Internet? Check from Control Panel > Network and Internet Connections > Network Connections. Right click your connection & choose Properties. Double click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP):

    Both set to Automatically mate...

Just checked, and the same settings were also used on my old system I've just upgraded from. That system didn't have this problem and was stable for around 3 years. The same basic software was used, but the drivers were obviously different for most things, like the gfx card, etc. The same modem (inc. setup software/drivers) was also used.

I'm on 2mb BTBroadband using a Voyager 100 usb modem if that helps...

Try setting them 'manually'... as you see from my example, I had to do that too, because I would get similar errors that the DNS server couldn't be found.

Well BT requires the setting to be left as they are, as the IP changes. And besides, I don't have problems connecting, I have problems disconnecting and shutting down Windoze...

The IP address of your DNS servers will hardly ever change...

I'm not 100% sure if that error message is relevent here, as its not shown up again and yet I'm still having problems. No other errors reported either.

I can't find any information about setting the dns manually on the BT website, and when I phoned them they told me the settings shouldn't be changed.

Open a command Window (Start > Run and type cmd, press OK).

Enter the command ipconfig /all (press Enter)

Your DNS servers should be listed (under DNS Servers).
