After reinstalling windows(and SP2) got the problem with shutting down Windows(XP home)- its extremelly slow process. Windows hung op right after I click Start -> Turn off Computer. No next steps, just stay hung up.. It
takes too many time, while the following step appears. There was no this problem before windows reinstallation.

what's in startup? or what's running at shutdown?

does this happen if u shutdown from safe mode?

eg - something other than win is the problem here = my guess

    Hi Kenton,

Boot into safemode by tapping the F8 key, then shutdown.

If no problems, then it is either one of your application programs that's hanging up, or, as I think, there is a driver(s) that is hanging up the shutdown.

    Regards - Charles

How to determine which device need update driver?

There was the following issue: one or few files were probably damaged, and I planned to restore system files use sfc /scannow,
but an employee chose other way -the system was rebooted in safe mode, with CD. There was 2 selection shown "Install" or use a "Repair Console ", it was chosen first, "To install'. Installation had 2 options: "Install new" or "Repair ". The "Repair" was chosen. Nor sure, was it a right way or not.

    Hi Kenton,

Can't make a judgement on that without knowing what the original problem was.

Ok, repairing is different from re installing.

Lets persue the possibility that its one of the startup applications thats causing the problem - its going to be laborious.

In normal mode, go into msconfig: start > run > type msconfig > ok.

Go to the startup tab > and uncheck all but one of the programs that autostart > reboot normally > re check another program > shutdown. Boot up > then re check another program > reboot > then shutdown.

Repeat this process for all the startups showing in msconfig.

There will be some programs that will refuse to stay shutdown - don't worry about that for now.

Make sure you are not connected to the internet, unplug the modem if its an always on connection.

    Regards - Charles

    Hi,

really, it was an updating issue: I did updated windows from ms site and problem solved, now the windows is turned off almost normally.

Was the aforementioned way of windows repairing correct?

    Regards
    Kenton

    Hi Kenton,

Glad that you solved the problem. Would be interesting to know what MS patch solved it though. As a general rule, having all updates, if it has an affect on startup or shutdown, would be to slow them. So one of those patches resolved a conflict.

The use of the repair option is usually the next to last option to use with a clean install the ultimate one. As you wrote, you didn't get a chance to use the scannow option first.

    Regards - Charles
