Securityuptodate problem

    Hello, I have just joined after reading your instructions on what to do from the other postings. I am not very computer friendly so it took me till midnight to do what you said in Safe mode re Ewido and SmitfraudFix.

    my home page was hijacked by this securityuptodate site and also a red box would appear in the bottom right saying I have a virus.

    so now in Normal mode things look fine but I don't know what all this log stuff you guys talk about is all about.

    I have Norton Internet Security which did not pick up on this. Then I have the free AdAware. then I paid and got the NoAdware through the internet and my problem was still there, then I followed your instruction with Ewido and Smitfraudfix in Safe Mode. Now in Normal Mode things seem to be fine, I ran Ewido again just to check and it came up with nothing.

    so basically am I ok now or do I need to do this HijackThis program as well. and if so do I do the .exe or the zip
    as I said I don't know much about this stuff so would appreciate a detailed answer.

    also, do I need to show you my logs??? (I am not sure what that is?!):)

    Mojgan - Welcome to the Board :)

    It sounds as if you have resolved your problems with Securityuptodate, but we need to go a little further ....

    Download Hijackthis.exe through Quicklinks in my signature and save it to a folder on your hard drive, say C:\HJT.

    Double click on hijackthis.exe and select 'Do a System Scan and save a log file'

    When the scan has finished the log file will open in Notepad. Copy the contents of the log and paste into your next post in this thread.

    here is the log

    also can you tell me once this is all done, do I keep the SmitfraudFix folder and Ewido or do I delete them
    I am guessing they take up space and my computer is old and not much space on it

    and if I am to delete them, how do I do it

    You have a couple of other problems in your log although the Securityuptodate problem appears to have been removed.

    Start HJT and click on 'Open the Misc tools section', then click on "Open process manager'. Locate this entry in the list, highlight it and click on 'Kill Process'....

    C:\windows\system32\winrdz32.exe

    Now click on the 'Back' button, this button will change to 'Config', click on 'Config' then click on "Delete a file on reboot', a File Open window will appear. Copy/Paste the following into it....

    C:\windows\system32\winrdz32.exe

    Then click on Open, and you will be prompted to reboot, select 'No' at this time. Do the same for this file ....

    c:\windows\dllhelp.exe

    Do not reboot yet, scan with HJT and place a checkmark against these entries and click on 'Fix Selected' .....

    When we are finished you may delete SmitfraudFix from your Desktop and uninstall Ewido through Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs.

    I don't have C:\windows\system32\winrdz32.exe
    or the dllhelp.exe

    I looked, what do I do

    I printed the log and compared it to what I saw on the screen when I go to the "Open Process Manager" and the entries are exactly like what you see at the beginning of the log with all the C:\ .... stuff. starting with ...... smss.exe and ending with c:\HJT\hijackthis.exe

    also is keeping SmitfraudFix of any use to me ..... ie. to keep me from getting virus again?

    That's better :) Your log looks clean to my eye!

    SmitfraudFix is a tool for removing Securityupdate.com and it's aliases - as such it provides no protection and you may now delete it. You may also uninstall Ewido through Add/Remove Programs if you wish, but it is a good program to have on hand to check out your system for adware, trojans, etc is you suspect a problem in that area.
