Hi there, i have been trying to connect my laptop and desktop together, as im using a music seqeuncer networking programme called f.x teleport.
I have connected the two p.c's correctly but im getting the error message

    limited connectivity or no connectivity

The network seems to work but i lose packets of info, when i send over packets of info i get the message 1,000 recieved for every 1,500 i send. The software im using seems to be more sluggish than i expected it to be.
Im wandering if this error message has something to do with the sluggish performance of the softare im using, the software enbales you to computers to run together to increase proceessing power for the music software plg ins.
But its actually ends up making the main computer slower

I have tried the steps on the help segment on this forum, i have installed the patch and registry files, and still no joy

Is there a way i can test the connection to see if its working properly, i heard this message to just appear for no reason

Please help thsi is making me go crazy

    Thanks

    M watts

    Hi M Watts,

You have not specified how you have connected the PCs together. Is it through wired LAN or wireless? If wired, thru a switch or thru cross cable? Any router involved? Please provide more details so that we can help.

    Welcome to WindowsBBS

How are you connecting the two PC together? If you are using a hub, you could be losing packets due to excessive collisions.

I'd suggest you buy a cross over cable and connect the laptop to the desktop directly with just that cable (no hub or switch between). That will give you the fastest possible connection with no opportunity for collisions.

    Desktop
    IP Address: 192.168.0.1
    Mask: 255.255.255.0
Gateway and DNS: leave blank - let the internet connection sort out your DNS, and it will be the gateway for this PC, so you don't need to set a gateway at the network card.

    Laptop
    IP Address: 192.168.0.2
    Mask: 255.255.255.0
    Gateway: 192.168.0.1
DNS: The IP address of your ISP's DNS servers. If you don't know these, connect to the internet on the Desktop PC and on that PC type the following at a command prompt:

    ipconfig /all

Your basic network settings are ok.

Have you any firewall installed on either of these computers? If yes, just remove your PCs from internet (pull out the wire if you have to), disable the firewall (even Windows one) and see if things improve.

    tried what? Disabling the firewall?

Just see if you can ping the computers - from your laptop goto MSDOS prompt type ping 192.168.0.1 -t <ENTER>. The response time should be less than 1 ms (0 ms ideally). If its greater than that, something is amiss somewhere & suggest you check both your computers for virus & malware.

Remove any DNS entry from your laptop.

You may have the cable plugged in to both computers but they should still report a speed. Has you cable been stretched crushed or pinched? Also is it a home made cable or bought? If home made you might have some pins mixed up. You might have to set you speed of your cards (not a common problem but sometimes you have to). Also another thing to try is unplug the cable then on both machines "ping localhost" if any computer fails to respond you have a dead NIC (make sure all firewalls are off).

Thanks very much for you help guys its apprecitated. I will try the ping thing.

I managed to get the two computers running the music software using this set up below, its seemed to be ok on the soft ware, and i didnt get the warning message limited or no connectivity, i basically re did the automatic home network set up in xp. Problem is now only my laptop can read the shared documents on the network, The laptop seems to be working fine but the desktop cannot see the laptops shared docements, only has its own. Also when i go to view 'other computers in this work group' option i get a message saying 'please contact the administrator', even tho i havent put any passowrds on it etc.
All these thing were fine when i was letting the computer find its own IP, but obviouly then i was getting the error message, DOh!
All works fine on my laptop, ANy ideas whats up?

    Thanks
