I have been having real trouble getting HP Pavilion 6343updated to more than 16 colors. I have even gone to ASUS web site and to no avail. I even tried the web site SIS but that didn't work either. The driver is SIS 5598 integrated.

I suppose you have been to the Pavillion 6343 website at HP. HP use proprietry drivers for their computers so the drivers you download may be an "upgrade" of the original drivers that will be on the CD that came with the computer.

If you have installed a retail version of Windows onto the HP you are probably fighting a losing battle. You will need the original motherboard/chipset drivers that will only be found on the HP installation CD.

Are you running a HP version of Windows? I can only help you if you are.

Hello Matt sorry that is took so long to get back I did go through HP web site and found the driver however now I cant get windows 98 to recognize the CD ROM I have tried everything from installing new programs, new hardware, going through the display adapter even going through explorer and nothing is coming up to open the cd driver to install the software. I do know that the cdrom is working cause the light comes on.

Looks like this is your only option (you must be running the HP version of Windows):
    From here:
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/...&product=61036&os=20&lang=en&docname=bph07165
    This is the US website.

If you have trouble, boot into Safe Mode. Go to Device Manager (Control Panel -> System), click the plus(+) next to Display Adapter, highlight and click remove for anything listed. Boot back into "normal" Windows, when the hardware wizard runs at startup, click Cancel. Do the steps specified by HP above.

Well Matt I am still having trouble I downloaded the firmware from HP web site but it doesnt recognize the software I am thinking it wont work with this CD RW. I contact HP technician and they told me to go through the registry and see if there is nodrive in Explorer under HKEY current user so I deleted the nodrive but that didn't work so they recommend I get a new cd rw cause part of it doesnt work. I can get it to eject and the light comes on. But that is all I can't get windows to see it at all. However the BIOS does detect it but windows cant. Even Device Manager doesnt see it.

Here is a test for the CD (RW) drive.
Make a startup disk (unless you don't already have one). Go to Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel and click on the Startup Disk tab.

Put the startup disk in the floppy drive and restart the system.

In the options, select start with CDrom support, it will be the default anyway.
When you are at the A:\ prompt, look at the lines above, it will tell you the drive letter of your CD drive (probably E: ). Type
    E: [Enter]
Put a disk in the CD drive and type
    dir [Enter]

If you see a list of directories and files on the CD, then the CD drive is working OK.

    Technical side:
If you can run the cd drive from a startup floppy it will mean there is a problem in Windows seeing/communicating with the drive. Windows runs optical drives (CD/DVD) using a set of drivers called the ASPI layer drivers. You will probably need to reset these.

To save "testing here" and "checking there ", I suggest you reset those drivers.

Boot into Safe Mode (start tapping the F8 key around the time you hear the POST beep at startup). Go to Device Manager (see above) and remove anything listed for the CD drive/s (while you are there remove the Display Adapter/s as well, you are running on a set of default "Standard Display Adapter" drivers anyway).

Shutdown, open the case and disconnect the data and power cables to the CD drive.

Startup to normal Windows. The hardware installation wizard will run to install the drivers for the Display Adapter. [Considering that your (current) Windows system has successfully run the display adapter before these problems (?)...]. Let Windows search for the best drivers. When it asks for where to search, uncheck all of the options (radio buttons). Windows will then search it's own system files for the driver information. The display adapter's drivers should then be found.

    CD drive:
When you get to the desktop, check in Device Manager again (the CD drive should not be listed). Shutdown and reconnect the cables to the CD drive.

Restart and hopefully your CD drive will be in working order.

Let us know how that goes. Your ASPI layer drivers may be corrupt.

Well I did all you told me to do and guess what the cd is working I put in a start up disk I had earlier and it gave the dir of that cd. Then I took off the display adapter and also did the cd things you said to do. And when I put everything like it was the da came back up but the cd still isn't working so I guess the ASPI layer drivers is corrupt.

Disconnecting the cables and removing the drivers in the Safe mode is the "meanest" thing you can do to the CD drive :)
ASPI drivers seem to be corrupt. This is usually due to a conflict between the burning software you have installed and another type. If the burning software is Nero (Ahead) based it may conflict with burning software that is included with later versions of Media Player (EasyCD/Adaptec based).

Try uninstalling and reinstalling the burning software.

Last time I came up against this and could not solve it, I reinstalled Windows. I have since learned that these drivers may have resulted in a solution:

Matt I have download the software in which you told me about. Well after I downloaded it I tried to find the file ASPIINSTALL.EXE. Windows couldn't find it. So I tried to install it through Add\Remove programs everything was going fine until I hit a key saying I need to 'hit a key' then the computer stopped responding well I hit the key again then a dialog came up said MS-DOS program has been terminated. Well I then tried to go through dos with the floppy I had made after I put in my start disk in the comptuer and still couldn't do it. I put in Adaptic\aspi\install\x86. I also tried to reinstall windows 98 but get the cd to start through my startup disk. This should have worked A: setup d: Am I doing something wrong here.

That's the Startup Disk "trick" :) The Win 98 startup disk makes a "virtual" RAM drive that it puts after all the drives (partitions) on the HDD, but before the optical drive/s, so if your CD drive is normally D: , using a Startup Disk it will be E:. When you get to the A: prompt (A:\) read the lines above. It should say "Drive E: = Driver MSCD001 unit 0 ". MSCD001 is the driver for you CD drive. If you want to try a reinstall, you would type
    E: [Enter]
    setup [Enter]

I always try a reinstall over the top of the current Windows, but one of the only times I have given up and formatted is when the ASPI layer drivers were corrupt.
Hope you have more luck than I did.

    Matt
PS (Win 98) Safe Mode does not load non-system drivers, so the CD drive is not loaded in Safe Mode anyway.
