    Hello all,

My wife's two-year-old Toshiba laptop (XP Home, SP2, fully patched) has seemed sluggish lately, particularly when connected to the Internet. Pages seem to take a long time to load, even for dialup. I found "Qttasks.exe" in the running processes, and I quickly got rid of that (CWShredder used to scan for "qttasks ", but it doesn't appear to anymore). In addition to the aforementioned CWShredder, we also run Spybot, SpywareBlaster, ZoneAlarm, and NAV2005 regularly, and the machine is well-maintained. I ran a "Hijackthis" log, and there doesn't appear to be any baddies in there, at least as far as I know, but you folks are more versed in these logs than I am. Maybe there are too many programs running at boot, and one or more of them is hogging the internet connection. Anyway, here is the log, and as usual, I appreciate any help that you can provide.

    Thanks in advance. Happy hunting!
    Brad

I see no problem in your HJT log.

How much RAM is fitted to the laptop - there's a heck of a lot of stuff running :)

A good cleanout of Temporary Internet Files and Temp files may speed things up a bit.

As a check download and run the trial version of Ewido. When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu ".

Boot into Safe Mode and run Ewido - full system scan, save the report and post it here.

    Hi Pete,

First of all, it's good to know that the log is clean. I was hoping that there was no lingering spyware in there.

The laptop has 512MB of RAM. In Task Manager, Iit usually shows 220-250MB free with everything running.

We just cleaned out over the weekend, and we like to clean out approximately every other week.

I'll run the Ewido program and post the report as soon as I can.

    Thanks again.
    Brad

    Hello Pete,

Sorry for the delay. I will run Ewido into my wife's laptop as per your suggestion tonight, and I'll post the report here tomorrow morning. If everything looks good to you, I'll dig into the startup and services.msc and see what processes we can eliminate.

    Thanks again.

    Hi Pete,

Here is the Ewido report of the full system scan. There's really nothing to show here-the only item that popped up was a medium-risk tracking cookie. I do have some good news, though...I have noticed a gradual, but significant improvement in performance since I found and removed "qttasks.exe ". Hopefully that was the root of the problem. Now, we'll try to figure out what startups we can eliminate without compromising the features of the machine.

    Thanks again!

The Ewido report is obviously fine :)

You might like to run an online virus scan for your own peace of mind at Housecall - accessible through Quicklinks in my signature.

You can remove this from Startup, unless you are desperate for Adobe Reader to open almost instantaneously ....

    O4 - Global Startup: Adobe Reader Speed Launch.lnk = C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 7.0\Reader\reader_sl.exe

A good applet for controlling Startup items is Mike Lin's Startup Control Panel , Once installed you will find it in Control Panel.

    Hello Pete,

I liked that Ewido program so much that I went ahead and installed it in my own computer. And it found a few things that the other programs didn't pick up on!

I probably will do the Housecall scan on the laptop some time over the weekend, and I'll take the Adobe Speed Launch out of startup. I just took it out of my own computer, and there really isn't much difference with it activated or not. I'll also see what other programs or services I can disable on startup.

    Thanks again for your help!
    Brad
