    Hi - Ramona and All,
Now that I've gotten TB running - I'm about to delete all my old NS7.0 files, but not quite "yet!" I think I'll move it to my 2nd HD, for safe keeping..
Ramona, in reading some of your tips on TB, I noticed you said sometimes TB will go nuts if using the default settings; use a profile??
I've never done that, I've always used the default settings, since I'm the only one using this computer.
My concern: If I create a profile in manager, will it automatically see my files or will it convert to a NEW native installation, which of course, I don't want...
In FAQ's, that situation isn't addressed or I don't find it.
Before I do this major "changing ", I want to be sure what the results/problems
    I'll face.
    Thanks All,
    John in Dallas.

    John,

What I was referring to, is the profile name "Default User ".

When the Profile Wizard comes up, the Profile Name field shows "Default User ". What I'm saying is, don't accept the "Default User" as your Profile Name.

Give the Profile a unique name, such as lonestar, or dallas, or whatever name you choose.

    Good Morning - Ramona,
    Thanks for your reply.
I understand the concept, but will naming a profile "change" my default settings? Will I lose all my mail, settings and like starting over new? Or, will there be NO changes to my existing set up?
    Thanks.
    John in Dallas.

You don't change just the name, but you create a new profile, with a new name. And, it will be there empty.
But, your mail is not "lost ". It is still in the old profile. Then, you have a few different options. One is to start from scratch. Having several usernames is very attractive to me, because I may want a profile with only one or two accounts.
And, I have the option of starting anew, or renaming a copy of the old Inbox and Sent files, and then copying the renamed files from the old to the new profile. Or, you may just copy the Inbox, and Sent files from the old to the new account.
Anyway, I am not sure that I understand your problem. Nothing will happen automatically, and if you did not have an installed NS7.x, you would not have the option of importing the settings. But, you can do anything you want, from NS to TB, or from one profile to the other.
There is no problem, unless you expect automation. And, do not "Move" or Cut anything. Copy is so much safer, because if you mess up, you still have the originals.

    John,

If your Profile Name is "Default ", then don't change it, just leave it as it is for now. However, in the event you need to create a new Profile in the future, then you can give the new Profile a name other than "Default ".

If you create a new Profile, then it will be necessary to move the Profile settings from the old to the new Profile. Nothing will be lost as long as you back up your Thunderbird folder before editing. Creating a new Profile will be like starting from scratch, with no preferences, and no mail, until you copy the data from the old Profile.
