I am losing Destop Icons and associated program using Add/Remove Windows Components??

When attempting to activate the widows fax program in my Laptop with Windows XP Home edition SP2, I went to the Control Panel Add and Remove Software" window and clicked on the "Add/Remove Windows Components." In the Windows Components Wizard Window, I checked the box next to "Fax Services."

I inserted the Windows Operating Systems disc when asked and installed the Fax Services component.

The result......I completely lost the MS Internet Explorer icon and access to the program. When I re-installed IE using the same method I lost the ability to use the Fax services???? I now have Fax Services and IE Icons back however I have lost the Accessories Calculator icon that I had on my Desktop. (I use the Calculator all the time.)

I assume I'm using the "Add/Remove Windows Components" incorrectly. I would appreciate all the assist I can get.

How long has the installation of Windows been on the laptop? If you have used the laptop for more than a year. I would suggest backup, format and reinstall. This is a long process. But it should fix alot of problems and will run alot faster. It seems to the easy fix but when I get weird things in Windows doing stuff like that, it can save me alot of down time.
