    I did some scans with smitfraud fix and ewido after following instructions from a different post by Pete C. I dont have HJT but here is what Ewido and smitfraudfix said

    ally22 - Welcome to the Board :)

    I understand that you have scanned with SmitfraudFix, Ewido and HijackThis. but you have gone no further than that?

    First please move hijackthis.exe to a folder on your hard drive. say C:\HJT - the desktop or the temporary location in which you have the file is unsuitable as HJT backs up any changes made. You may find it more convenient to download HijackThis again through Quicklinks in my signature.

    This is your next step ....

    You may like to print out these instructions as you will be unable to connect to the Internet to read them while in Safe Mode.

    Boot into Safe Mode and log onto your usual account.
    In Safe Mode, open the SmitfraudFix folder again and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd

    Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

    You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ? "; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

    The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter ".

    The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process. A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process - a copy of this file is saved as C:\rapport.txt.

    Reboot into Safe Mode and run another HJT scan

    Reboot into Normal Mode and post the contents of the SmitfraudFix log located at C:\rapport.txt into this thread and the HJT log which you will find in the same folder as hijackthis.exe.

    I'm the girl who emailed you earlier.

    Yes, i've done all that but havent been using hjt at throught, as I didnt realise it was needed. I gave it a go though later on and my above comment is what it told me. My computer now appears to be working fine, but I just want to be sure.

    You have a few minor problems and one more serious problem - shown in bold below.

    Boot your computer into Safe Mode ....

    Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

    Scan again with HJT and place a check mark against these entries and click on Fix Selected.

    Then navigate in Windows Explorer to C:\program files\common files\system and delete the file ms1src.exe. You may need to enable Show hidden files and folders (Tools > Folder Options > View - check 'Show hidden files and folders' - remember to go back and check 'Do not show ...' when you have finished).

    Reboot into normal mode and scan again with HJT and post another log.

    I missed one line in your HJT log last night :(

    Please reboot into Safe Mode and scan again with HJT. Place a checkmark against this line and hit Fix Selected.

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MPlay64] c:\program files\common files\system\mplay64.exe /noerrorinfo

    Then navigate in Windows Explorer to C:\program files\common files\system and delete the file mplay64.exe. You may need to enable Show hidden files and folders (Tools > Folder Options > View - check 'Show hidden files and folders' - remember to go back and check 'Do not show ...' when you have finished).

    Reboot into normal mode and scan again with HJT and post another log.

    Thank you so so much for all your help, I really am grateful.

    I wonder how it's getting round... I had an email saying to check out a video, and it all spanned from there for me. Just had the same email from someone else about 10 mins ago too, but deleted it straight away.

    P.S My ad-aware programs is still finding Critical objects? Is this a problem or just an every day internet usage thing?

    Basically it's an 'Internet thing' - whenever you go to a web side a cookie (small text file) is downloaded to your computer, notionally to speed your entry to that site in the future. Some may hold whatever passwords you used to enter the site. But many of these are so-called adware and some are tracking your internet usage (tracking cookies). Whereas most are generally harmless they are nevertheless an invasion of your privacy.

    To provide a good degree of permanent protection against over 5,500 such 'things' download SpywareBlaster 3.5 (freeware), update it and enable all protection.

    For real time protection download and install Windows Defender (from Microsoft - it will be part of the next Windows called Vista). Defender not only provides real time protection it also autoupdates and autoscans.

    Protection is only as good as the definitions held in these programs - inevitably the odd one will slip through, but what one does not detect another, like Ad-Aware SE might.

    Be sure to keep your antivirus fully updated too.
