    Just an FYI.

Some of you may know this some may not.

There has been a problem since August of 2005 (I started experienced it on November of 2005). The scan engine for McAfee 4.5.1 updated from 4320 to 4400.

This scan engine causes many computers with Win98 to run very slow, give BSODs, and lock up...among other things. This problem also affects WinXP PCs running McAfee with the 4400 engine though XP seems to better handle it.

The best work arounds are to drop back to the 4320 engine or to disable McAfee when not using your computer to do tasks that could cause viruses/spyware/whateverware to land on your PC. Dropping back to the 4320 engine, however, may not allow McAfee to eliminate some viruses.

McAfee is currently working on a new engine 5xxx something. This engine may or may not work with the 4.5.1 version of McAfee.

If anyone is having these problems just do a search on the internet or post here for more info and I will post some links.

I will also be posting this in the virus forums and any other related forum.

    Have a good one.

    Hi,

We are also experiencing troubles with our win98 PC's running McAfee. Mainly BSODs - fatal exception 0e is a favourite.
It seems as though the latest (last weeks) virus definitions have killed off the win98 users. I've had to beg, steal and borrow PCs with XP on them to keep people running.
However, we have a legacy system which will not run on XP so will have to stick with 98 - if anyone can advise on how to keep our win98 PC's virus free - it would be greatly appreciated.

    Regards to all

    shouldjustwork,

Welcome to the board. You should use AVG Free for your systems. It is a very good AV program that will cost you nothing. Also, I would suggest running some adware/spyware programs with any AV software you may choose. On my Win98 system, I use SpywareBlaster, Ad-Aware, Spybot Search & Destroy with AVG. No problems and it runs quicker then when I had Norton products installed. If you want, you can also run a couple online virus scans once in a while. I use Panda's ActiveScan and Trendmicro's Housecall for online scans.

Does AVG free allow on access virus scanning?

The AVG free license is only for single non-commercial home use PCs.

We are trying the AVG professional 30 day trial and it works well.

    Thanks for that,

When I get a spare hour, I'll give AVG a try-out and go for the 5-user Network license if it stops all the BSODs
I'm hoping it will speed up those 98 PC's as well - the sticking mouse pointer movement drives me mad !
I also hope that McAfee will remove itself completely

I can't say for sure. I have yet to try since switching over to AVG. I will give it a try tonight after work and post back.

I tried the online scans with AVG enabled. I was not able to either on the Win98 system, but I was able to do the Panda scan on both of my XP systems (one with AVG and one with Norton). I disabled AVG on the 98 system and still nothing. On all three systems, I was not able to get Trendmicro to run. Must be a problem on their side of things. I have never had a problem before. I will have to try again tomorrow to see if I can get somewhere with it.
