Security Update.com problem

    I seem to have the same problem as Buckstone with a reference to www.securityupdate.com. A red circle with a bar thru it changes back and forth with what looks like a green handicap symbol. Periodically I too get the yellow exclamation mark. I have downloaded the same files as you recommended for Bucksone, and hope you can assist. The smitfraudfix log is as follows:

    I have split your post to a new thread.

    Please turn off System Restore - your restore points will be infected. You can turn it back on when your system is clean.

    Please ensure that hijackthis.exe is in a folder on your hard drive, say C:\HJT and not on the Desktop or in a temporary location. Any changes made in HJT are backed up and the desktop/temporary folder is not a suitable location.

    You may like to print out these instructions as you will be unable to connect to the Internet to read them while in Safe Mode.

    Boot into Safe Mode and log onto your usual account.

    In Safe Mode, open the SmitfraudFix folder again and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd

    Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

    You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ? "; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

    The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter ".

    The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process.

    After SmitfraudFix finishes - reboot into Safe Mode and scan with HijackThis.

    Reboot into Normal Mode and post the contents of the SmitfraudFix log located at C:\rapport.txt into this thread, and the HJT log which will be in the folder from which you ran HJT.

    Nearly midnight over here so I'll be logging off now. I'll look at the results in the morning.

    Have done as you directed. Below are the two log files you stated to include. The only odd thing that occurred, was during the cleaning process of smitfraudfix - it stopped responding at the blank desktop screen, so eventually - after 2 hours of letting it sit, just in case - I rebooted and carried on with the rest of the process.     I see you are running Norton Antivirus - make sure that is updating regularly.

    I don't see a firewall loaded in your HJT log so assume that you are using the Windows Firewall. I suggest you try either Zone Alarm (free version) or SunBelt Kerio free version. They will disable the Windows firewall automatically - not good practice to run two firewalls.

    Many thanks for your help on this most annoying issue. I'll read the article you mentioned - Norton is set to auto-update and I do program updates regularly as well. Would you suggest Norton Internet Security as an add-on to keep the systems the same?

    One point I overlooked - some of your System Restore points contain the infection which has just been cleaned. To avoid the possibility of restoring the infection at a later date turn off System Restore - this deletes the restore points and then turn it back on again.

    Norton Internet Security is a rather bloated piece of software and is known to have the potential to cause a few problems on some systems - either of the two freeware firewalls I noted will work in harmony with NAV.

    Kerio Firewall

    As recommended, have downloaded the Kerio Firewall and will see which I prefer Kerio or ZoneAlarm. I though Norton was a bit piggish and slow from what I heard. Thanks for the advice on that. Have also made some amendments to my Security settings as suggested in that other thread - although I now have to figure out why my banking site won't come up - it's 128 bit encrypted and everything. Even added it to Trusted Sites, but still doesn't like it. Will play around a bit with that one.
