Trying to connect an old ME Machine onto a windows xp network.

The machine receives a valid IP address. However it says the network is unavailable- although Computer ID and Network name are set correctly.

Other machines are able to see the computer.

It can ping 127.0.0.1 ok, and it can also ping its own IP address. It cannot ping the router.

Seems strange that there is a connection one way and not the other.

    Anyone have any clues?

    change the cat cable.
a one way connnection usually means:
    1. bad connector on cable.
    2. bad connection (contacts) on nic.

to test cable swap it with a known good cable.

  3. to hide this advert.

Cable sounds a good shout. It could be a transmit cable problem.

However, the process of getting an IP address from a DHCP server is not a one way process. It starts with a broadcast out from the NIC as it hits the network. The broadcast out is basically saying "I've not got an IP address assigned. Anyone out there got one for me ". The DHCP service in the router then replies with an IP address. Therefore, the DHCP service won't give out an IP until it receives a broadcast from the new NIC.

    So three posible answers:
    1. The computer is using an IP address it was given before the cable broke. IP address leases typically have a life of a few days. So if the cable has just broken, this could account for what you are reporting.
    2. Your PC is having problems pinging the router, because there is something else on the network with the same IP address as the router.
    3. You are pinging by name, and this is a name resolution problem.
