    Mary,

You should be able to resolve the MSVBVM60.DLL problem by downloading and installing Visual Basic 6.0 SP5 - that file is included. Possibly your version is corrupt.

Several programs - not necessarily originating from Microsoft use Visual Basic in the underlying programming. I recently had notification of a missing dll when Counterspy - based on same original software as Microsoft AntiSpyware/Windows Defender- started on boot up. That was a Visual Basic dll and the problem resolved by installing the VB runtime files.

    Web Pages Slow to load

Hello everyone. I've given the matter some thought and I have decided to have my computer checked out thoroughly. My nephew has encouraged me to have it upgraded (Windows XP) and give my "system" a general professional overhaul.

I have found this website really helpful and very interesting. I'll be without my computer for a few days or so next week but I plan to revisit your site and continue to learn!

    Thank you, once again.

    Regards,

    Mary.:)

    Mary,
what are the specs of the computer?

I have "upgraded" a few Win98-boxes to WinXP and my honest opinion is that a 700-800 MHz processor and 256 MB RAM is the lower limit.

WinXP on a 500 MHz processor and 128 MB RAM will be a disappointment.

My own BOAC (Box Of Assembled Components) has a 1 GHz processor and had 256 MB RAM. It started its life with WinME. Upgrading to WinXP was OK (I didn't regret it) and adding another stick of 256 MB RAM made it considerably better than on WinME.

Thank you Christer. I'm afraid I'm not good enough to understant some of the terms and technology so I'm sorry I can't be very responsive.

This site has prompted me to "get learning" and I appreciate the input given, thank you.

    Regards,

    Mary:) :)

    Mary,
show your nephew my post. If he can not explain what I mean ... ;) ... don't trust him!

In short: If your computer is too old (low specs) it can not handle XP very well.

    Slow to load web pages

Hello Christer - I took delivery of my newly upgraded computer tonight and I am writing to you on Windows XP. Early impressions are excellent and everything seems to be so much faster and (despite some unfamiliarity) somehow easier. I also have new Firewall and other protection (I don't fully understand the difference.)

I appreciate all the guidance I've been given on this site and I have reclassified myself from "intermediate" to "beginner" as I know realise how much I still have to learn of the basics. Thank you all.:) :) :)

    Regards, Mary.

    Slow Loading Web Pages

Hello - It's on the bottom left side of the page just above "previous thread" As a new person to the site I was unfamiliar and it took me a wee while to find my way around.

The first reply I made was a personal one - just because it was the only way, at that time, I could see to communicate. Slowly but surely I'm improving!

    Mary,
thanks for posting back with the good news!

I guess that the the "perceived speed and responsiveness" of a computer depends on what the user was running before. A fresh installation of WinXP may beat a troublesome installation of Win98, even on six years old hardware (500-750 MHz CPU and 64-128 MB RAM).

    Slow Loading Web Pages

:) Hello Christer - Yes, the problem seems to have gone and I'm delighted with my new system. I understand that, in time, I'll need a completely new system but, as one who is not (not yet!) technically adept, I'm grateful to plod on and accept, thankfully, all the information and advice of others. Your website is really very helpful and interesting. Thank you.

    Regards, Mary.:)
