Hi everyone, I put in a new wireless router (Netgear WGR 614) connecting a wired laptop (for installation purposes) and 2 wireless (desktop and 2nd laptop). I think all was fine. Was able to access internet and saw other computers. But there is a problem now on the desktop as it shows a compuer to computer network in addition to the wireless network both with the same name. The computer to computer is unsecured and I want to delete it leaving the wireless in place. Don't know how to do that. Any help will be appreciated.
    Thanks.

Hi JerseyGirl1064. Welcome to the forum.

I've not responded to this message earlier because I am not quite sure what your problem is and hoped someone else would be.

If by computer to computer network, you mean a wired network connection, then it will be inactive as long as you don't connect a cable to the PC. Can you provide a better description of "compuer to computer network" as that would be helpful. Or a screen shot showing the window where you have a problem and what you are trying to remove.

Unsecured in what way? What is it that is secure within the wireless connection that is not secured on the computer to computer connection?

Hi Reggie, thanks for answering. I spent some time last night trying to straighten out the network (wireless with 3 computers: 2 laptops running xphome and xp-pro and desktop w/ xphome) and the problem was with ZoneAlarm. The new router used a different internal address than the old one and when I fixed that, everything was good, even the ad hoc (computer to computer) became secured (meaning I need a key to log on). I just didn't know how the ad hoc network got on as it was not there with the other router. Being it is now not logged onto, I don't think I have to worry that it can be hacked into. That was my concern as there are other wireless networks in my neighborhood. Am I correct in assuming that? I had wanted to delete the ad hoc leaving the wireless in tact. Still don't know how to do that. Hope this explains things. I appreciate your response. Thanks.

As long as zonealarm is enabled and running on the network connections you should be secure from people hacking into your PC from either the internet or another wireless device. However, review your firewall rules to make sure you haven't inadvertently opened a port you shouldn't have.

If you enable the wireless router security features (WEP or WPA) you're traffic will be secured and you'll prevent others using your wireless router.

Yes, I definitely enabled WEP. Thanks for the info. Have a great weekend.

I would suggest using WPA as it is alot more secure and easier to set up.

Thanks for your input. I'll be putting a 4th computer (laptop) on the network this week, so I'll look into changing to WPA when I add that one. I've only used WEP - 64 and 128 but I'll rely on your advice and put on WPA. Have a good weekend.
