Hello - Although I've had my Windows 98 computer since 2000 I'm definitely not good with it! Most of the time I have had no real problems but now the web page loading is so slow that I often have to give up altogether. I think the "Memory Available" may be low but I'm not sure if they are related. Is my computer just old and dying or can anyone suggest anything I can try to quicken the web page loading, please?

    Hello Mary,
    welcome to WindowsBBS ... :) ... !

Have you done any "house cleaning" of the computer since 2000? Deleting temp files and such? Defragmenting?

If not and you don't know how to, I will give further guidance.

MarySmith1911--And you may need to prune your StartUp list so only a minimum of programs are running at boot.
When you respond to Christer's earlier question, he will guide you through that procedure, too.

    Slow to load web pages

Thank you Christer and Welshjim. By status do you mean "Windows 98" or is it "Internet Explorer" My ISP is BT Openworld - Broadband. I have contacted the online desktop help but my problem persists.

I'll be glad to try what Welshjim suggested and, if you can give me guidance on how to do this, I'll be grateful, thank you.

The conversation Mary and I are having may be confusing to some. Mary didn't find the <Post Reply> button and PMed me with a reply to my first post. She told me that she had cleared the Temporay Intenet Files folder and defragged in Safe Mode. (That is what I meant by the "status" of the computer, relating to my question.)

I don't have a Win98 computer to hand so, Jim, you promised too much ... ;) ... but anyway, from memory:

In Windows Explorer > Tools > Find > do a search for temp and clear (not delete) all such folders. If a file should resist, it is currently in use.

In Internet Explorer > Tools > Internet options > clear the TIFs and History once more. If you clear the Cookies you will have to re-login on sites requiring login but I would take the hit and clear them.

    Jim said:

I'm not sure about the steps but if I remember correctly, go to Start > Run > type in: msconfig > hit enter and a window should pop up. Click the "Autostart-tab" and tell us what is running from startup.

I assume that you run decent AntiVirus and FireWall software but how about Malware removal tools?

Downloading, updating and running Ad-Aware Personal and Spybot S&D is next on the "to do" list.

Christer--You got it pretty correct. On my PC the msconfig tab is called just Startup.
MarySmith1911--I agree with Christer about firewall, antivirus and security programs, but see if you notice any improvement from the other clean up steps first. Don't want to discourage you with overload.
And concerning the Startup list, what really is important to report are the programs that have the box checked in the left hand column. You will find the name of the program in each line at the very end of the info in the Command column. If that column is too narrow to see the end, you can widen the column by dragging the little indent at the right of the word Command. There unfortunately is no way of copying this list directly, so you may have to record the info with pencil and paper. There is a program called Startup List which is available here
    http://www.merijn.org/downloads.html
under Official Downloads. You can copy and paste what it reports, but again I do not want to overload the circuits.

    Slow to Load Web pages

Hello Christer, Welshjim and Arie - Thank you very much for all the information. I am slow on the uptake but I am eager to learn. I'll stop for this evening but tomorrow I'll start again. I'll look forward to trying the things you have suggested, thank you.

    Regards, Mary.

    Web pages slow to load

Hello - I am slowly working my through all the advice given. I, having had my PC for six years, thought I was intermediate - now I realize I am definitely still a beginner. With your guidance I have discovered many, many buttons and links I never knew existed - I'm still learning, albeit in slow motion! Thank you, all.:) :)

    Mary,
don't hesitate to ask further questions. Someone will be here to help and next week, I will probably have an old LapTop with Win98SE to check things on.

    Web Pages Slow to Load

Thank you Christer - and all who have offered help. Somewhere along to line I have done something and now, on startup, a box comes up "Error Starting Programme" File

    .DLLfile,MZVBVM60.DLL,

I've tried to find it in my programme files but perhaps I have inadvertantly deleted it.

Do you know if it is important and, if so how I can get it back, please?

If it is not important do you know how I can delete the box? - it won't delete but that's probably a good thing.

Meantime - my web pages are definitely a bit faster so things are progressing.

I have found your help really worthwhile and have added it to my list of favourites - for quick access!

    You're welcome ... :) ... !

I went Google on MZVBVM60.DLL and found indications of malware. It also suggested that it should be MSVBVM60.DLL (note the Z>S) which indicates that it is a MicroSoft file and related to Visual Basic Virtual Machine. Do you have that software installed?

    Slow to load web pages

Hello Christer - I really am a novice. You are right about the "S:Z" and it is, as you said MSVBVM60.DLL. I checked my programmes and couldn't ss anything resembling it. If I have it do you think it could be anywhere other than in programmes? Perhaps it was there and I have inadvertently deleted it.

Until now I have never tampered with anything on the computer and, as you see, I'm not so good at it. Until you said I didn't know it was to with Microsoft. lI'll be glad to hear what you think - every time I switch on the box comes up saying it was "not Found" I click the X to continue and, so far, my computer seems to be working.

The file is a component of Visual Basic, a programming language. I don't know why you have it but it may have been included in a program that indicates neither MicroSoft nor Visual Basic.

A while ago, I checked a Win98 system for downloaded and installed updates to prepare for a fresh reinstallation. One of the updates pertained to Visual Studio. After the fresh installation, I was not prompted to install that update. After installing Office 2K, I was not prompted for that update. I don't know why it was on the original installation.

However, it may be an "on demand" component of Windows or Office and if so, will get installed when needed. You would probably be prompted for the installation CD if/when that happens.

As I understand it, it can also be dropped from the web by malware, a so called "drive by" installation.

    Now, I will stop speculating ... :p ... !

By the way, don't worry too much about malware. I drew the conclusion that malware is a possibility since it is prompted for at startup. If it is malware, it does no longer work ... ... since that file is missing.

Another thought, have you visited Windows Update lately? No matter what, go there and check if anything related to Visual Basic or Visual Studio is needed!

    Web pages slow to load

Thank you Christer. I'm trying things now I would never dared to venture into in the past! I'll try Wlindows up date as you suggest. I tried to run a Trend Virus Scan. I have Java on my system (I checked programmes and saw it in there) but Trend wouldn't run the virus check this time as it said my Java was not enabled. Do you know (since it is definitely on my system) how I can enable it?

I'm turning up all these problems but it really is because I am becoming more adventurous - with guidance of course! Thank you, again.

    Regards, Mary.:)

I assume that it is Sun Java. Get the latest update here, it should work after that.
