Windows xp Home can not read the CDRom. Windows setup can read the CD–Rom Drive, since I can boot from CDRom. I tried replace LITE-ON COMBO driver, but it is a standard microsoft driver, no other upgrade available. When click on CDRom, windows show message: "Windows cannot read from this disk. The disk might be corrupted, or it could be using a format that is not compatible with Windows." All CDmedia is perfect, however.

I have no third-party burning programs installed, only windows default burner.

well, I want reinstall Internet Explorer first. When I inserted CD, then via Start / Run; type
    rundll32.exe setupapi,InstallHinfSection DefaultInstall 132 %windir%\Inf\ie.inf

    Enter

    I got prompt browse for IEXPLORE.EXE -> "file IEXPLORE.EXE SP2 needed.. "

    Where to get it?

Yes, I have read this microsoft notes already. But it written so mistily, that a help is needed to understand them.
    Probably this note:

"Windows XP SP2: Reinstall Windows XP SP2" ? I want reinstall Internet Explorer, not windows. I have windows SP2 installation file on my hard drive.

I agree it is slightly confusing. IE 6 was part of Service Pack 2 - the instruction is to reinstall SP2.

This is not necessarily as easy as it may at first seem - if you upgraded from SP1 you should have the option to remove SP2 through Add/Remove Programs, but if you installed XP from a CD which already incorporated SP2 that option is not available and a repair install of Windows is called for.

Why do you want to reinstall IE 6? Have you a specific problem with it?

Internet Explorer SP2 came via Windows Update as far as I recall and AFAIK is one of those updates which is not shown in Add/Remove programs as it cannot be uninstalled.

I have a SP2 in Add/Remove programs menu, since it has been upgraded from SP1. I have problems with IE: when I open some sites from Favourites (periodically), IE show error:

Sorry - brain not in gear this evening :( As the CD drive will not read at present SFC is out of the question and the workarounds involve copying the i386 folder to the hard drive.

Which also raises the point, of course, that although uninstalling SP2 is straightforward enough reinstallation poses a problem if you have SP2 on CD. Only option would be to go to Microsoft Update/Windows Update and let it download or download it direct to disk (200Mb ish) from an MS URL which I can give you. You would need DSL/cable.

I will try System File Checker sfc /scannow to restore bad files, if required. Because CDRom not work, I need copy I386 folder from Windows XP CD to my hard drive. Then registry editing required to specify windows patch to this files. How then to restore changed reg setting back to original patch?

Then I want reinstall SP2 (I have it on my harddrive). Not clear, could this reinstalling procedure cause any problems?

    Ok then :)

Copy the i386 folder to C:\i386

Then edit the registry as shown in the attached screenshot - lower two red lines.

Before editing a string export the string - it will save as a .reg file. To revert back to those settings doubleclick on the reg file to merge it into the registry.

IMO leave the i386 folder on the C:\ drive and the edits in the registry - it makes running sfc so much simpler in the futire.

so I need backup two registry keys, ServicePackSourcePatch and SourcePatch? No i386 name required in patch? CDInstall patch(on image top) no need to be changed?

Just the 2 keys and just C:\ as shown. Ignore the top red line - that was for another poster.

I'd had no time repair system, because a employee came first and install windows over, he put XP CD in CDrom and chose boot from CD in BIOS, and select repair, but this way windows was set over, all programs, settings, SP2, etc were lost..
