Running IE6. When I go into Windows explorer and to the Cookies folders and try to move or copy a cookie, I get the following: Your current security settings prohibit copying or moving files from this zone. Can someone advise what setting and where it is? MS backup will not copy the folder either, it comes back and says, index dat file busy.

Other programs on computer are: Zonealarm, Spywareblaster, Spybot, don't know if any of them could cause problems.

    Thanks
    Joe

Do you have IE closed when you attempt to copy?

Win XP let me copy one when I tested it just now...Curious to know why you are wanting to do this? Pretty sure you can use them on another machine. They need to be indexed to the .dat file..

    The mystery deepens :)

    In XP I find ....

Right click > Copy brings up the message posted, but

Highlight and use the Copy to button at the top of Windows Explorer (XP note) works a treat.

Your best route is to backup the cookies from Internet Explorer ....

File > Import/Export > Cookies. They are saved in a txt file and can be imported to the same computer or to another one.

    Cookies, cannot copy or move

I am running Windows ME. I tried to copy from windows explorer. I use to be able to copy cookies to another files but something has changed and I can no longer copy files from my cookie folder. I can delete the files. So how do I copy from Internet Explorer?

I fully understand that you are running Me, but I don't have access to a box running that OS. However we are all using IE 6 and I am endeavouring to determine why Steve's system and mine appear to be behaving differently.

    Cookies

    Pete
I think I found the area where the problem is but something, program must be changing it automatically.
When I am in Windows Explorer and open up Windows files and select cookies, at the bottom, far right I get the restricted sites logo, I then click on that and I get the Internet Security Properties, I then go to the custom level, its set to high, I reset to medium and after that I can copy and move whatever is in the cookies folder. I went back and checked setting and it was on high again but I could still move and copy. Maybe it takes a reboot and the high setting becomes in effect again?

Will have to play around with this but like I said, some program must be setting the level to high. My best guess.

You are so right :) I learn something new each day.

Interestingly if you follow the route I took ...'

Ie > Tools > Internet Options > Temporary Internet Files > Settings > View Files that shows the Internet Zone, not the Restricted Zone. Going to the cookies folder in Windows Explorer (different location in XP) it shows the Restricted Zone as you discovered

I couldn't see anything familiar in the list of restricted sites, but I do have several hundred in there courtesy of IESpyads.
The default level is High unless you customize the settings.

Go to Start\Run, and type in Regedit and press Enter. Navigate to this Key.

    Hkey_Current_User\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

    Look to the right and see if you see anything like this;
    EnforceShellExtensionSecurity
If you do, either right click on it and Select Modify and set it to 0, or just delete "EnforceShellExtensionSecurity ".

    If not there, look here.

    Hkey_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

The affects of this Policy Restriction will cause the symptons described on this thread. I believe the idea is to allow only IE to access these folders, and I do use this on my 98Se machine.

I use spywareblaster, says over 5000 items in database etc.

I can now move and copy from the cookies folder, including the whole folder but when I try to include the cookie folder in my backup, using MS backup I get the error about the index.dat being busy so could not copy. Interesting.

When I get some time will have to check what Mark said to do. I think I would leave this on for protection.

I now understand better, you really do not need to backup that file. It only indexes the cookies currently in the folder, and past cookies. It needs to be deleted from time to time for the reason that it never shrinks in size or is cleaned out.
How to delete: Install MoveOnBoot, it will add a new item to the right click Context Menu "Delete file(s) on next reboot ".

I use SystemSecuritySuite to clean out my TIF.
    http://www.igorshpak.net/
It also deletes the index.dat folder in Content.IE5. Of course it is recreated on reboot, but its size is reduced to the minimum (32KB) so it does not build up. (The contents--except for the desktop.ini files-- of the individual Content.IE5 folders are also completely deleted.)
Using IE Tools|Internet Options|General tab|Delete Files does not reduce the Content.IE5 index.dat folder to anywhere near the minimum and some bits and pieces are, indeed, still in the individual Content.IE5 folders.
    ---------------------------------
I really have not understood why the Windows Explorer Cookies folder is a Restricted Sites, but it is. I cannot comprehend what that accomplishes.

    Cookies, cannot copy or move

Nothing in either place. Would like to learn more about this from you, maybe direct emails?
