I am having problems with 2 computers and would appreciate your help. Both are running Windows 98.

    First problem

I am trying to format the hard drive of one by typing Format C: and it has reached the point where format is complete - writing out file allocation table - complete - calculating free space (this may take several minutes)............... and then goes no further so even inserting the Windows 98 disk in gets me nowhere.

Have tried again with Boot disk and now get to point where it says invalid system disk - replace disk etc.... neither Win98 CD or boot disk change this message.

    Second problem

Problem I have with the other computer is that I have tried to install Outlook Express 6 (after reinstalling Windows 98) and I get an error message that says it cannot continue as it is missing MSOE.dll. I searched the Microsoft site for the error message and printed off a couple of items but they don't appear to relate to OE6. I uninstalled it and then reinstalled it but still had same message.

I have run sfc but nothing. I have reverted to the previous version of IE which is 5.5 but still the same message. I am reluctant to change the registry editor as I am not sure that this is the problem and note sure that I know how to do it, even following the instructions on Microsoft site.

    Any help appreciated. Thanks

Please post your 2nd question as a separate thread in the Internet Explorer / Outlook Express forum.

As for the formatting problems, try to find out the manufacturer of the hard drive, & check their web site for a diagnostic program. It may well be that the drive is failing.

Apart from opening up the back of the tower and checking the hard drive is there any other way of finding out the manufacturer?

    Thanks

If the hard drive is recognised in the BIOS it should show the make, model and size.

If not your only option is to open the case and maybe remove the drive.

The info I see at the top of the main bios screen is: ROM PCI/ISA Bios ((P5ST-A)) CMOS Setup Utilility Award Software Inc

Is that the manufacturer or should I be looking elsewhere?
    Thanks

That is the detail of the BIOS, made by Award.

If there is an entry on that screen 'Standard Cmos setup' click on it and it should bring up a screen with the time setting at the top and details of the drive about half way down the screen.

As it is an old BIOS it is quite likely that the manufacturer will not be shown. Modern Bios's tend to show this - in one place or another. I have checked out an old Win 98 PC I have stached away and there is no manufacturer info shown.

I think your only option is to remove the drive.

Thought you might say that. Once I have managed to find out the manufacture what diagnostic am I searching for on their website?

    Thanks

You should look for 'Disk Diagnostics' - post the Make, model no, etc of the drive here and we will help out :)

You can also check Device Manager, under Disk drives.

Mine shows: HDT722516DLA380. Put that in a Google Search & you'll most likely find what you need to know.

From what Sheila has posted I rather think she is unable to boot up.

Problem resolved by some info given to me which might be of interest.

I tried the WIn98 boot disk again(alreadytried several times) At prompt ran scandisk When done entered: fdisk/mbr and the ran the Windows 98 CD again and it worked. No idea what the information referred to but it obviously worked.
