Downloaded the SP1 patch for Office XP (2002). When I fire it up, it works until it gives me an error message:

"Error 1328. Error applying patch to C:\Config.Msi\PTC3.tmp. It has probably been updated by other means, and can no longer be modified by this patch. For more information contact your patch vendor. "

Anybody had this problem and developed a work-around? Or do I have to uninstall and reinstall. The only updates I have applied have been those directly from Microsoft.

I have seen this error written about before. Not exactly sure what caused it but there is a fix/work-around.

I did some searching but must be "search term impared" today and couldn't find much.

This Link is to a site that seems to know the problem and the fix but you have to register with them before they will send you the url for the patch. May well be perfectly legit but I can't say one way or the other.

Thanks, Newt. I threw caution to the winds, and gave the site a try. If you don't hear from me again, don't go to the site! Otherwise, I'll give an evaluation of what it provides,a nd it's efficacy.

Still computing! Went to the site. Their instructions are clear and right on and fixed the problem. Microsoft also has a series of their instructions for a similar work-around, as well, but it is full of MSbabble and the fix from Notorious is quite straightforward. They are out-front about why they want you to register: They will be selling stuff, and getting your address will allow them to e-mail ads. One presumes that if this become annoying, it could be terminated. We'll see if I get too much spam or malicious code, but I suspect not.

    Thanks for your note!
