When I download using IE6 (or even 7) the statusbar shows the file downloading to 100% complete, flashes on the desktop then disappears.(a file search shows that they are not on my computer)
I have done a repair install of XP with no success.
    Firefox downloads OK.
I have tried countless virus scanners
I'm using XP pro SP2 not on a network.
Anybody got ideas on how to fix this.
    Regards Alan

P.S. A strange thing that I did notice was that windows firewall was locked by a Group Policy. I removed this somehow, I'm wondering if it's linked to that.

Now that the firewall is turned off, have you tried downloading something again?

My work laptop just started exhibiting the same symptoms, and our help desk folks have not found out why as of yet - A web search has show several similiar posts on various sites, with one implicating the "Windows defender Beta software" as the culprit. I will try uininstalling in the morning to see if that does the trick. You may wish to try the same
