I am trying to set up a dsl account on my friend's computer. The computer is Dell dimension 4400 (256mb ram). Speed stream is the modem (SBC) The help people say they couldn't get an automatic IP address (Or is it DNS). The ethernet card is working fine. The modem shows all three lights on steady (power, ethernet and dsl). Yet, when I use the Internet connection wizrd I cannot get the highlighted option of connect to ...by using username and password (that's what SBC wanted me to click). Only the third option, internet connection is always on is open and is clicked in the circle. I don't know how to get around the problem and set up an internet account.

    I would appreciate some help.

You sure they aren't trying to get to use the connection wizard on the DSL modem itself? This is just a reach, open an internet browser, enter in "http://172.16.0.254 ", that may the IP address of your DSL modem, and see if you need to enter in a username and password.

Only the third option, internet connection is always on is open and is clicked in the circle.
That is the one you need to use, your DSL modem creates the connection, and maintains it, not your computer.

    Connection problem

Thank for your solution. I will try it tomorrow morning when I will get to his computer (or talk to him). Meanwhile, let me mention that he does not have a user name and a password. That's what we are trying to establish.

If you have anything further to add, I will appreciate.

Your ISP must have provided you with a default user/pass? You wouldnt be connected if you didnt, and with the DSL light being on, you must be connected.

No, the problem started when I connected the hardware and tried to get the username and password from the IP provider (SBC). It seems that you have to go through some screens and put in your own username (with the provider after @) and password.

I agree with mark that it is a wizard in the router itself. One clarification. Do you have internet and just trying to set up e-mail? This would make a whole lot more sense.

Have you tried simply pulling up a web page in IE? You should not have to run ICW to set up a DSL connection. If the DSL light is on and you are connected, you already have a username. You should call SBC again and talk to them about setting up/finding out what your username is.

    username and password

Unfortunately, that's where the problem lies. I called SBC and they were the ones who took me through the whole trip about using their cd and got to a point when they said they couldn't get an ip address automatically; they said the problem was with the computer itself; and I talked to Dell and they checked the ethernet card drivers and all that and said everything checked out o.k. And SBC people then tried to take me through the internet connection setup wizard and found that only the third option was available (where the dsl was always on). And they asked to reinstall the windows and that didn't work. That's where the problem stands.

I dont think i have much more to offer you, but still do not understand what whole the problem is. Try logging into your modem like mark said, but try 192.168.1.254 (along with the one he gave you). I also think you talked to a tech rep who was new on the job. If all the connections are right, and the modem is connected to the net, I dont see why you cant surf the web. Also, what are you meaning about "...they cant find an automatic IP add.... "? IP add and DNS servers are two different things.

Yes, both technicians seemed new to the job. I guess they meant obtaining a dns address automatically. I will try to follow your suggestion in the morning and let you know the result.

Seems the default IP add for a speed stream modem is 192.168.254.254. Again, enter this into the address bar of IE

Internet connection wizard problem -- solved

Thank you jdc for your help. I finally solved the problem this morning. It was such a simple thing--I learned this morning that the phone account was not in my friend's name; it was in his wife's name. That rang a bell and figured that I was putting in the wrong name for a user name. That was why I was getting nowhere. Once I put in his wife's name I had all the options in SBC connection wizard software. And everything worked fine.

    Thanks again.
