    :confused:

    Hello Everyone! :)

    I hope that someone will be able to tell me how to choose the correct download that I need so that my AV-Firewall-Internet Security program, (TrendMicro's PC-Cillin 2006 & it's ALWAYS up-to-date), as is my computer,
    a Dell Dimension 8200; 768 MG-RDRAM; 80 GB Harddrive...Windows XP-Home; SP,2)

    For approximately 8-10 months, the "Vulnerability Scan" (just one of the many things that PC-Cillin scans for) ALWAYS finds that MS04-028 which it con-siders a "Very-High" Risk that 'targets' "Office" is missing from my OS.

    Without going into too many details, I have gone to Windows Update & Office
    Update.....according to them, I am up-to-date.

    This began HOURS and DAYS of research on Microsoft's site...I think I've read
    almost all 700+ links for MS04-028 downloads and fixes, and I've come up empty. In fact, I've downloaded SO MANY that weren't right, that I made a folder on my Desktop called "WRONG MS DOWNLOADS for MS04-028 ". There are approximately 70 things in there!!!

    Yesterday, I got so excited because I found info on Microsoft TechNet page, titled "How to Obtain and Use the Enterprise Scan Tool "; Article ID--894193;
    Last revision April 12, 2006---(VERY recent date, so I started to think that THIS was the one I needed.... No?); Revision 8.1. It was the ONLY ONE that mentioned MS04-028...dated 10/12/04. This made me think that I must have installed a Patch, Service pack or something wrong a while back. I was so hopeful that I had finally found the 'missing link'; however, when I read the tech-info I was once again baffled....but, I thought that if I install it, the worst that could happen is that it would find a new home in my "Wrong Downloads" folder;)

    I opened the download...all seemed to be going well, but then a little window opened up that said " "Please type the location where you want to put the extracted files ".....and there staring me in the face is a blank white space with a flashing cursor at the beginning...it knew I had no idea where to send the files. I wanted to SCREAM!!!! How the heck would a novice like ME have the foggiest idea where I want the files to be sent??????

    Will someone PLEASE help me before I lose what's left of my marbles. Did I pick the right download....if not, which one do I need??? I 'll put the link for the page I got my info from...from there you'll be able to follow the same path that I took. Hopefully, I went the right way. If so, where do I send the extracted files to?
    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Here's the link that I used to get the download;

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Thanks in advance to everyone who is brave enough to tackle teaching a novice how to troubleshoot, and I sincerely apologize for the extreme length of this question....I just didn't want to leave anything out.....in the rare event that I did miss something important......just ask.

    Thanks again SO MUCH...you have no idea how grateful I am for your help.

    Sincerely,
    Spookie :) :)

    Hello Spookie!

    You have downloaded an administrative file which is designed for an administrator to use on several systems, possibly over a network. No matter what, you can use it.

    The file is self extracting, like a zip archive and you need a folder to extract to. If you don't have it, create C:\Temp. Tell it to extract to this folder. When extracted, within it you will find an executable, setup.exe or install.exe which does the actual installation. When done, you can delete the contents of C:\Temp.

    I regret to report that it didn't work, Christer!

    :( :( :( :(

    Hi Everyone;

    Well, Christer......I did EXACTLY what you said. I had such hope in my heart that I could FINALLY get rid of that MS04-028 once and for all.

    After I completed the excellent directions that you gave, I closed the windows that were open....and then I ran the "Vulnerability Scan "...and there it was.....
    MS04-028; VERY HIGH RISK; "Target "---Office.

    Do you think that re-booting will complete your fix????? I have Broadband, so I leave my PC on all the time. What do you think?

    Thank you for your help....I'm very grateful that you shared your knowledge with me.

    Gratefully;
    Spookie :)

    A good rule of the thumb is to reboot after applying any patch. Reboot & see if you can get rid of this problem.

    As I understand it, you were able to extract the file and run the scan successfully from C:\Temp. The scan itself is not the fix, it just tells you that your computer is vulnerable in one way or another.

    I focussed on the extraction issue, not the fix but now realize that it is about the good old GDI vulnerability.

    In MS04-028, there is a list of affected software and updates to download and install. Have you checked that list against your installed software? Have you checked in Add/Remove for which updates have been installed?

    When I last did a fresh installation of an XP system, including Office, I was not prompted for the KB832332 update. It had been superseeded by another update (included in the latter). The updates listed below are the ones I installed for Office XP SP3:

    KB833858
    KB873379
    KB837253
    KB873352
    KB890829
    KB895589
    KB904018
    KB892841
    KB905758
    KB905754
    KB905755
    KB905649
    KB911701

    As you can see, KB832332 is not there but I don't remember which one replaced it.
