    Hi everyone.

    I am running XP / SP2 on a compaq P IV machine.

Whenever I try opening my D: drive it hangs up for a while and eventually displays this message after a long wait "The file or directory is corrupt and un readable.. "

(FYI, I can't hear the drive clicking or anything..)

It runs chkdsk on that D drive on every startup but it won't help either..

I am worried as I had data on that drive. Any ideas as how I can access that drive / data ?

Thanks in advance for any info.

What filesystem is the D: partition? If FAT32 then chkdsk can't do too much, if it's NTFS then run chkdsk /r from the recovery console or PE Disc.

Really need more info about your system, but the best way to examine a FAT partition is with DOS, for example with a win98 boot disk.

Huh? The computer I'm using now is mostly FAT32 and chkdsk does all I ask of it. Yeah, there's a couple of switches that are only usable on NTFS but chkdsk should still work with either the /r or /f switch. More than likely that's all that's necessary. Chkdsk should be fine for FAT32.

You can however, do as sparrow said and run scandisk from a win98 boot disk if you want.

Absolutely! it shud b fyne 4 Fat32! as a matter of fact, it is fyne.. as this thing worked n I got my drive back to 'normal' thanks for all the infos :)

[Tell ya wht.. it always ran chkdsk when i started booting this machine as i mentioned b4 in my first post. But perhaps the missing thing was to 'manually' press 'Yes' when it was defaulted to a 'No' response against running the chkdsk operation!!]

    Thanks again everyone!
