Have you tried leaving the password field empty and just hitting enter?

Try sharing it as 'c', taking the '$' off, and then try to reconnect \\name\c

Make sure all the computers have the same username and password. You'll never get a login prompt. C$ is an admin share, if the XP firewall is running it will refuse connection even if you have the rights to connect.

You have to share the C drive as such first.

Open My Computer>rt click on C>Scroll Down to Sharing and Security. Share name as 'C' (w/out the quotes). Make sure the Share this folder on the network and Allow users to change files boxes are checked. To rename the share, you may have to disable sharing and then re-enable it again (one of xp home's horrible networking features):)

Edit: This has to be done on the computer you want to share.

On a security issue, it is not best practice to share your whole C: drive. Especially if you are not using passwords. By sharing the whole of the C: drive, you are not only allowing remote access to your documents, but also all of your system settings.

ALWAYS share the folder holding the documents you wish to share and only that folder.

Also I'd recommend always using a password on your computer - for every account. Even a simple password is far better than no password. Using a password is more secure, but also having no passwords occassionally confuses systems. Probably because the systems confuses a blank password (" ") with no password. So using a password makes your system more reliable too in my experience.

Mr. Bad Experience here echos the suggestions by ReggieB about being careful with sharing.
