Welcome to the board Travis! When your system gets going, have you run any AntiVirus or Adware programs? What programs do you have starting right away? You could try removing some of those startup programs in Start --> Run --> msconfig. Go to your Startup tab and remove any check marks from programs that you don't need to start right away. If your system boots fine, then you just have to figure out which program is causing the problem. Replace the check marks one by one to see when the problems start.

twinstonk--Just following up on what MinnesotaMike has said.
With WinXP you really do not need any programs indicated in msconfig to run at start up (except antivirus and firewall), so you can just uncheck all of them and then add back one by one as MM has suggested.
Normally I would not advise running a PC connected to the Internet without firewall and antivirus programs running, but you can overcome any problems that might arise by disconnecting your PC from internet connection while running the above tests.
And here is a reference to help you decide what programs to have running at start
    http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php
Remember, you really do not need any except for firewall and antivirus.

P.S. As MM has suggested, scanning for malware on your PC is a good idea. You might want to consider the procedure here.

Did you have automatic updates enabled?

My machine appears to have downloaded KB900485 when I switched it on, and when I came to restart the machine later, I get the Windows XP logo then the start after failure screen. Tried "Last known config ", safe mode, etc; but it just hangs with a black screen.

May be coincidence, but may be related to the patch?

I myself have used a program named Startup Cop from PC Magazine to control what loads at Startup. I use it on all versions of Window from 95 on up including XP.

I have also found that auto updating may cause problems too if it should kick in at boot up. Or at least before the complete startup sequence is complete.

Also. Over the years I have learned that the LESS loaded at boot up the better. I have also learned that it the sequence changes TROUBLE ( conflicts ) can result.

It allows the machine to boot quicker.
    It cuts down on conflicts.

So my overall learning has been that loading things ( or too many ) at bootup MAY NOT be a time saver at all.

    I fully agree.

More probably a problem with the Graphics Adapter. Check the monitor on another computer.
Update your drivers, starting with the chipset/motherboard drivers, then the graphics, then any others that you think may be involved. Post back if you need help finding them, you will need to know the model numbers of the hardware. Everest in my signature should help ID the hardware.
