i have a client using a 8 port dlink router. they are now wanting to add a wireless laptop to the network. i plan on piggy backing a dlink wireless router on top of the existing router. so my question being that both use the same ip for the wizard setup would i just be able to use a normal patch cable and put the cable in one of the wireless lan ports or would i need to use a cross over cable and connect the two router via the wan port.

    Ageed.
Or, if you already have the second router do this:

Connect the new router directly to a PC. Do not run the setup wizzard!
Change the routers IP address to something unique like 192.168.0.2 and make a note of this.
    Turn off DHCP
    Set your Wireless settings.

Now connect this new router to your 8 port only by LAN ports. This will bypass the routing portion of your new box and allow it to be a switch with a wireless acces point.
It's a good idea to write the new IP address on the router so you can remember for future reference.

I had a manufacturing plant where I strung together about 8 linksys routers for access points and cat5 repeaters spaced throughout the building every 90 meters.
did as mentioned above and it worked like a champ.

It comes out of the box configured on 192.168.0.50

If your network isn't 192.168.0.xxx you would have to change your computer IP to 192.168.0.xxx and then put http//192.168.0.50 in your brouser to get to the AP admin page.
Reset it's IP to one friendly on your network, restart the AP and change your PC back to your network. Then your cookin with gas.

not sure what the individual ip's are on this network but they are in the range 192.168.0.xxx.

so if the ap defaults at 192.168.0.50 and no other node is using that ip would i even need to change anything ???

is there anything in this ap that needs to be change to just act like a bridge and not as a router ???

If the network is 192.168.0.xxx your golden.
I would set up WEP if it were me. Even if you made the key 00000000000000000000000000 (26 zeros) 128 bit.

I would setup WPA because it is more secure than WEP and much easier to setup.
