Hi, I recently bought a laptop with xp pro and I made the mistake of typing the name in for the user name wrong. Well, it starts you as owner as default, but later gives you the option of changing it or making a new one. I made a new one, and would like to change the user name. I believe it would be possible to go into the registry to change the user name. I even tried going into control panel and just deleting it, but it wouldn't allow me to delete it. I was wodering what it would take to change it in the registry. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

    Jay,

You can change the 'user' name... go to Control Panel, then User Accounts, then click Change an Account, then change to the name you want. If you also need to change the user profile folder in Documents and Settings see this. HTH

If you are talking about the registered name, you can do so from the registery.

Start>Run>Regedit. Go into Edit>Find, type 'RegisteredOwner' and hit enter. It should bring up the key:

    'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion'.

Double click on the 'RegisteredOwner' item, and you can change the name there.

But!! beware poking around too much in the registery as there is no 'undo button' in REGEDIT.

Sound advice :) Always export the registry key first so that if you make a mistake or foul up you can merge the original entry back into the registry by double clicking on it.
