Recently, alot has gone wrong with my computer. When it boots up, to windows open, saying please insert disc 1 to continue the installation. They are both hp programs (hpqtra.exe, hpgalry.exe) that only stop coming up when you end the process thru ctrl alt delete.

Also, in the processes tab in the ctrl alt delete menu, there is a process called system idle process, and it runs on about 70-90 cpu while all other programs run on about 3-5. I have looked in the CPU performance tab, and saw sudden spikes in the performance. My computer is running really slow, and I would like to get as many processes that I dont need deleted, and fix these sudden spikes in performance.

Sounds like your computer needs a good spring cleaning. remove all cookies and the contents of the recycler/recycle bin and the windows\prefetch folder and all \temp folders as a start. Hope you've been running safely, with firewall active as well as antivirus and anti-spyware programs. Please list what you do or have done so far. And use the attachments method of posting your screen shots (page down in the posting window and you'll see the button to click) and just follow directions to upload your pics nere.

This is quite normal - System Idle Process represents the processing capacity of the CPU which is unused at that point in time, so a 90% value indicates that 10 % of the CPU's processing capacity is being used.

For the \temp folder, is that C\windows\temp and then delete everything in that folder?

And what things should I list that I have done so far? Things like spyware scans?

    Oh ok thanks!

The HP programs at startup may be a failed install of HP software or drivers. Rerun the installation program or find updated program/s for it at HP.

Delete all the temp files and folders in these locations ....

    C:\Windows\Temp

Start > Run > type in %temp% > OK to show the contents of the Documents & Settings\...\...\Temp

    Temporary Internet Files.

There are alot there, is there any of them that you'd reccommend?

OK, when I typed in %temp% I couldn't delete everything in there, so I'm going to try later when I'm not online.

Sorry - should have mentioned - a couple or so files will be in use and cannot be deleted. you may find the same in C:\Windows temp - delete all that you can.

You've got me on that one!:D
Do you have a HP computer and have had a problem with some of the HP software?
Do you have any HP hardware?...A HP printer, scanner, etc and have tried to install the software/drivers for it.

You will need to find the model number for the HP items, we can then find the most recent updates for the software or drivers that you can use.

HP computers usually have the model number in clear view, use the links at the support website if you need help in finding the model number. If you have found the link to your computer/hardware, copy the address for that webpage and post it in your reply.

Would not run any HP software that came with your computer. Like most brands, the programs are a marketing gimmic and just replace normal windows functions, or are advertising, so they're not needed. They run at boot time and continue in the background, slowing your computer by using up resources better left for windows and the real programs you use for productivity.

You can usually turn them off in msconfig.exe (type in the Run window).

It would help if we knew what else you have done in addition to deleting temp files.

Have you followed any of the suggestions re. the HP spftware?

Your problem doesn't lend itself to a quick, easy solution. Suggest you read and follow the advice in this article. You may have to copy it to a html (text) editor as I did for easier reading.
